When did Fender stop putting a strap button on the headstock of the P-Bass? With the strap button on the headstock; was there a button on the upper bout also?

Around '69...these basses had both buttons.

My 71 Jazz had one.
So did my 76 Precision.
This was an extra strap button affixed to the back of the headstock adjacent to the E tuner. I tried strapping up to it once and it sucked. My guess is that it was intended as a spare for when one of the others got lost. I reckon that when they did away with pickup and bridge covers they got rid of the 3rd strap button too.

"The Fender Bass - An Illustrated History" documents the button as disappearing around '69. It's entirely likely that instruments were made with them after that date. The button was fitted starting around 1960, and was supposed to help those moving to electric from the doghouse to strap the bass into a more vertical/upright position, thus easing the transition from one instrument to the other.

As with all such things, you can never say never with Fender. Odd stuff crops up all over, either errors, one-off items, custom jobs. The above book also shows, for instance, a Charcoal Frost Precision with a black-blocks-and-binding 'A' neck, fully decaled as a precision from the factory. Also a pair of maple-board fretless Jazz Basses, something the factory never otherwise offered.

Thank you for that info.
All I'm looking for now is the dates they had painted headstocks; and when the finger anchors were moved to the top and became thumb rests.

If anybody has any info on that, I would appreciate it.
I may have to look for "The Fender Bass.. book.

Today's the 50th Anniversary - the day the music died.

Finger rest became thumbrest over the 74/75 period; painted headstocks were almost always on Jazz Basses in custom colours. Not much in the way of these beyond around 1970 or so. I've yet to see even a picture of a factory Precision with matching headstock.

As said above, never say never...

The book is by (former Fender CS Senior Master Builder) J W Black, and Albert Molinaro, owner of Guitars R Us in Hollywood, CA. It's a Hal Leonard book, should be easily available, and is available under a Fender part number too.
ISBN 0 - 634 - 02640 - 2, cover price $24.95. Published 2000, so not much in there about anything modern, but for the older stuff - goldmine!

Thanks a lot all -- my questions answered. I'll have to get the book.
