A p bass body with jazz bass neck. the tele style head stock and tele style output jack on the bottom. it would be 3 tone sunburst with a white or tort pick guard. for pickups i would have one p and one j. oh yeah and i'd give it 2 vol 1 tone(the tone sort of taking the place of where the output jack usually is).

My dream bass is "THE FUNK MACHINE."

I don't want to own it, I just want to know it still exists and is returned to the Jamerson family so they can put it in the R&R Hall of Fame or keep it if they want.

I keep hoping that someday it will turn up, but I'm beginning to have my doubts since the statute of limitations ran out on it in early August of 1990 and there has been a long standing "no-questions-asked" reward posted by Fender for a very long time. It looks like someone would have popped up with it if it was still in existence trying to sell it or claim the reward by now. It has been over 25 years since it was stolen. It may have been parted out or even destroyed. Or it could be hanging in a dingy pawn shop somewhere right now.

Great thread because it got me to thinking! I'm really lucky to have owned 9 different Fender basses at one time or another. James Jamerson only ever owned two, and both of them were stolen from him! That was just so wrong.

So again a reminder to everyone to keep an eye out for the Funk Machine. It is a stock sunburst '62 P-bass that had a badly bowed neck. Last known secure at Jamerson's Los Angeles residence in early August of 1983 mere hours before his death. It is easily recognizable because when you remove the neck on the heel you will find the word "FUNK" carved out by hand using a pocket knife filled in with blue ink.

If you locate the Funk Machine, know where it is, or know what happened to it, call (650) 513-4414 to discuss how to get your reward upon authentication of other secret hallmarks exclusive to this instrument.

My dream bass would actualy be simple a vintage standard precision with a rosewood fingerboard (because IMO maple has no place on a fretboard for a bass, just sounds to cold). Just the single split single in the midle position, one tone, one volume, and white with a aged white pickgaurd. Simple but sweet.

I have played and owned many different fender basses. My favorite is a 76 fretless precision with a maple fingerboard. The tone is superb.

I actualy love maple, the look is very pleasing to the eys, and for a guitar I think it sounds amazing, I just like a warmer tone for a bass

Well for bass you need a snappier sound, so your volume can be high and still hear your self acousticly... uh-huh!

rosewood is ok when you do modern-rock or sometimes blues or R&B but almost everything else needs maple

Well to each thier own, I personaly prefer rosewood but I have heard maple produce sounds I've liked as well, and I agree that it would produce a much snappier sound to help cut through a mix nicely.

My personal dream bass would be a Squier (you're allowed to be surprised, but don't be mad, I'm left-handed and don't have the money for an American Standard :D) P-Bass Special L/H, so a P body with a Jazz Bass neck, EMG Hz pickups and electronics. The pickguard would stay white but the body would be British racing green.
