Hey all just got a Fender Precision Bass Lyte today. I have wanted to check these out for a while. I did an even trade my Spector Legend (the original w/ Bubinga) for it. It has a P-J combo and it is like a black and blue-ish/purple-ish sunburst with a matching headstock. Got a few questions about it. first and foremost is it an ok bass. I am a fan of anything that Fender puts it name on. Second is it active or passive with an active EQ? It looks ans feels like it has a jazz neck on it. The tuners look different I've not seen anything like them. You guys know anything about them? Please tell me what you think of it. I don't think that I got taken it needs a bit of work but nothing to badly. I really liked the way it looked, felt, and sounded. I have been playing for six-teen years. Not bad for a twenty-five year old huh? Get back with me guys!!!!!
Thanks!!!!!!!

Is this Pbass Lyte from the '90s? Cuz if it is, it's a P Bass with lyte tuners, it was just for the Lyte series. I love the bridge on it too. IIRC it is active electronics on 'em. The body, I'm not sure but it's very light. The neck is very thin. I used to play it when I was in college at a local music store. I've always compared it to my own bass. The store at the time tried to sell it for $749.99, yeah, so broke arse college kid me never bought it. G/L with it. They're very nice. A local shop here just got one on trade and it has custom(crappy) flame job added to the paint. It still sounds good like I remembered it in my college days.

I love 'em. I'd own one, but just before I bought one, I was offered a stupid great deal on an American Precision Deluxe that was (and is) awesome, so I let it go.

Hey PowerJazzBass,
My precision bass lyte is dated 93-94. Is mine different from the others? Also, did you say that the pickups were passive with an active eq? Where can I find documentaion about this bass? How long were these guys around for? Were they quite popular? Do you know about how much they sold for in stores? I loved my spector but when I saw this bass I had to have it. The strings were really dead and the action a mile high off the fingerboard but it sounded awesome. The headstock had a crack in it that ran from about the E-tuner and stoped at the A-tuner. I am good friends with the guys at zGuitar Center in Toledo and they are fixing it for me. They said it just needed some glue. I am really looking forward to getting it back. I get to pick it up on Tuesday. I want to find out as much as I can about this bass. Thanks!!!!!!!

I can ck it out at the store tomorrow re: the pups and the electronics on 'em. As far as price, I remember them being in the $750 range in the '90s, I was in college in '92 and that's when I used to gig a lot and drool for the Lytes. The action can and should be adjusted if it's that high. If you can't fix the crack on the headstock, you should tryto get a Geddy Lee Jazz neck for it - the Geddy Lee neck is very slim - since the neck on those don't look like Pbass neck.

Again, gimme time, I'll look it up as long as it's still there - it's selling for $350 here in Green Bay - it's used, but I'm sure they would drop the price on 'em. I'll ck with you later.

It is an active pups set up. Lyte specific bride/tuners. Basswood, maple neck/rosewood, MIJ. At least this is what is @ the music store.

I'm pretty sure that Johnette from Concrete Blonde used one at one time atleast. (around Bloodletting I think, not too sure after that.) SHe sounded great. Great example of the P/J tone.
Should be a really nice bass.

I bought my Fender P-Lyte in '93 in Las Vegas. It's white with the gold hardware. It has the active electronics in it. As far as it killing 9V batteries, I only experienced this one time after I bought it. I left it plugged into the amp and it died. I still have the bass and as a matter of fact, I'm looking into selling it. If anyone is interested in seeing it, send me your email and I'll attach some photos. My asking price is $350.00 including the hardshell case which went for about $140.00 back in '93 + the cost of shipping via the postal service from Germany. (it'll still come U.S. mail). It's not molded to the bass but it does the job well. This bass has been from the States to Korea and back twice! I'm selling this bass because I have been playing guitar and 5-string bass now.

I had a tobacco sunburst P-Bass lyte I bought at a pawn shop back in the early 90's when I was in my teens. At first it was fantastic!, great feel, sound, and good looks. But after about a year or so, the active electronics in it fizzled out. At first I thought it was a bad battery, so naturally, I replaced it. Then FOUR DAYS LATER, I had to put another one in! Of course I unplugged it between playing.
This thing kept sucking the life out of 9V batteries while unplugged! Eventually I sold it back to a pawn shop, telling them the active electronics were bad.
Anyone ever heard of this problem?

Just thought I'd put my two cents in on the P-bass lyte.

i had the same problem. i would go through a battery every 3 or 4 days which made me thnk the active electronics would be on at all times, instead of just when then cable was plugged in. I ended up getting a wiring diagram from fender and rewiring the entire thing from the ground up. It has worked good as new since then.
I have a '86 (i believe) Pbass Lyte Deluxe in a flamed maple (redish black) finish with a paint matched headstock. Its been my working bass for about 7 years now and I love it to death. Im actually looking to sell my Spector Legend Classic 5 string (amber burst) to buy another pbass lyte. (anyone interested in a Spector?)

You cannot switch the P-Bass Lyte neck with a Standard Fender. I've done a lot of component-switching, because I've customized my two standard P-basses and I prefer maple fretboards to the more common rosewood. Also, because I have a P-Bass Deluxe (two pick-ups; J-bass neck) and I swapped out the Jazz neck for a P-bass neck. I even put a P-bass neck on my Jazz Bass, cuz I just prefer the fatter neck.

I love almost everything about my Lyte: the way it sounds, the way it feels, and the way it looks. It is a natural wood finish with gold hardware, and active P & J pickups. Way lighter than my standard Fender basses. With the active electronics and onboard EQ, it is my go-to bass for slapping. The only thing I don't like about it is the neck, which is J-bass style.

Problem is... think about it: the reason it is so much lighter is that the bout is much smaller. Less wood = less weight. But it is still 34" scale, so this means the neck has to be longer, and, in fact it is a 22-fret neck, unlike the Fender standard 20-fret neck. If you put the neck from a Geddy Lee on there (assuming it even fits in the neck pocket) you will have something like a 33" scale and the intonation will be totally farked.

I've noticed a few of them on eBay, and they typically go for a bit over $400.00, so the $350 that one of you is asking is a good deal if the bass is in good shape.

My wife bought me a Lyte P Bass recently, however I cannot find a case that it fits in well. Any help would be appreciated.

Good luck finding one. When I got my '87 it came with a junk case from Fender, it was hard shell but not the good ones they sell for crazy money now. Due to it's 22 fret neck, I can't find any case that'll fit it properly, so I kept the case and never looked again. Yours should've came with the same case IIRC. Go to your local music store and ask for any used ones, test fit 'em. Also maybe some universal case would fit it. Again, good luck searching for one. Let us know if you found anything. :)
