why did they never have block inlays on them other than the big block whick i dont think is a true p bass

Precision basses didn't have or need block inlays because that was a frill and a P bass is a no-frills bass. It is the essence of roots bass playing.

Precisions were the first real fretted basses and most widely recorded basses.

What other bass could be strung with dead strings and be used for years to cut hit after hit?
That's exactly what Jamerson did with the Funk machine, his missing 60's Precision bass that was used on most of the great Motown hits!

Block inlays- We don't need no stinking block inlays!
