This list will be incomplete without Chris Squire and Peter Hook.

John Paul Jones is my all-time favorite, but then again I'm a pretty big Zeppelin freak.

Les Claypool is interesting :P

This is great bass tab site (no ads either!) that has accurate tabs for just about every Smiths song for Andy's basslines (site also contains bass tabs for Moz). Playing these basslines is great practice ( as you know they can be pretty tricky/technical).

Also the bass player that played on almost all of the Mo-town songs. Somebody help me out with his name! He is a white man. I know you know who I'm talking about Miami Mike!
8)

The man who played on the biggest Motown hits was James Jamerson and he was a black man. The white man who played bass for Motown during and after Jamerson's reign is Bob Babbit. Babbit is the current " Funk Brothers" bassist.
These two gentleman could out-groove anyone mentioned in this thread!

It is reported that Carol Kaye also played for Motown. She definitely played on all of the Beach Boys albums as well as for Quincy Jones and many TV show themes of the 60's and & 70's. She is a great bassist who had the nerves of steel to play in the studio for 25 years or more!

Finally someone mentions Pino Palladino!

But I'd like to know what criteria is being used for "best" because each of the guys mentioned does their thing well.
