Hello Forum,

I am new to this forum, and have recently decided (after 35 years) that I would much rather set my own bass up. The guy who has setting my Fenders up for all these years has a sudden adversity to Fenders and I guess it is time I do myself.

My 75 P bass is buzzing frets 1 through 5 with fret 1 kinda dead, undoubtedly it is time for a neck adjustment (kinda like going to the chiropracter?)

My questions here are...to adjust do I turn the truss rod clockwise? About how many turns? What is reccommended string height for the lowest possible action? My Music Man basses indicate 5/32 is it the same for Fenders? Should the string height be measured at a certain fret, like the seventh?

Is there a set up doc anywhere on fender.com that I can read?

Thanks all

Steve

Bassteve.
Very interesting post, as somone with your experience still has other people set up his guitars, dont get me wrong, i think its a great post.
Iwas in a guitar store last year buying a bass and there was a guy in shopping for a new acoustic guitar, this guy was a very good player but after buying the guitar he asked the assistant to restring it for him as he couldnt do it himself, which i found interesting.
At the end of the day, if you feel more comfortable getting someone else to set up your guitar then fine, i was the same but it got to the stage where i couldnt afford it so i had no choice but to learn to do it myself and having done it the first time i was annoyed with myself for not having learned in the first place.
Hope you sort it out as when you do you will never stop messing about with your guitars, and they will play the best you have ever heard them as you have sorted them out yourself

The other posts have given you some websites to learn about set ups, but it seems to me that you may have more problems with you bass than a set up can fix.
Are the first 5 frets worn down on your Precision?
Have you tried new strings to address the dead spot you referred to on the first fret?
The optimun set up for your bass has to consider it's present condition. Necks will move with the change of seasons so learn how to adjust your truss rod but the ideal action for your bass will be dictated by the quality of the frets and the straightness of the neck as well as its need for a shim in the neck pocket to give it the proper tilt or pitch.

Thank you all for the information and input/feedback/suggestions. Very helpfiul. For me, I have always brought my basses to a friend who has "set" them up for me. I just never took the time to learn or try myself...did not want to ruin anything. However, having finally done this myself, I guess I am somewhat dissapointed that I did not try years ago. Would have saved me lots of $$ and gotten me more in tune with my instrument sooner in life... I guess you can say that you can teach and old Dog new tricks. In this case, the information was quite intuitive, and it did help me solve the buzz and more importantly provided me with the confidence to continue to do set up on the other basses I own as well.

So thanks all.

I found this forum to be quite helpful.

Happy New Year!

Steve
