i know fender is all about the new. what about those vintage freaks? im one and (i hope) i will live to se the day these basses will be vintage help me sign a petition that you can get no through body bridges or with them as a option

Body-through stringing has very positive tonal attributes. If you want to top string a body-through Fender bass and still have the option of body stringing also, then it either needs the Deluxe bridge or should have one already. These are pretty handy bridges versatility wise, but don't have a lot of mass. Actually they are one of the most compact bass bridges around. A standard P or J bridge cover will fit over them.

At least one string maker doesn't like the sharp bends of body-through stringing, especially for their flats. Also when running it top through keep an eye on the metal string ferrules which insert from the back and don't let them vibrate out of the back of the instrument and get lost. I've seen this several times.

I agree that hardly anyone (other than another bassist) looks at the back of a bass, especially when you are playing it. So play it.

Don't worry...be bassy!

Thanks for wondering Zod. I've been REALLY busy.

I've been in the planning/design phase of the new bass site and working on gobs of other sites simultaneously. Fairly daunting. I am behind schedule, as usual. Also I'm currently working on three voiceover projects...and when you throw in the holidays....I just haven't had much time for goofing off. When the new bass site is finished it should be a good resource serving as sort of a gateway to the online bass world page.

I've never had a string through until I got my American Standard and I think it helps with sustain and tone big time.

I'm kind of the opposite, I wouldn't buy a bass that didn't string through the body. I think the sustain is that much better. Whether it looks good or not is a matter of opinion.

Thanks Master of the Mold, I updated the site just Tuesday night by adding the all new "Brother Dave's Fender Field Guide." This is a 4 page downloadable WORD document will help you date almost any Fender bass ( or guitar) and includes how to decode pot dates. Naturally I couldn't cram everything in there but all USA, all Mexican and most Japanese instruments are covered.

The idea is you print it out and put it in your car and then when you find something interesting that you can't date right off the top of your head, you can whip it out as a quick reference. It's free, at least for now. It is listed first in the INSTRUMENT DATA section of the Resources page in my signature. Enjoy!
