I've had Dimarzios in a few basses. My last bass, that I regretfully sold,
was a chopped 79 p bass with a jazz pup in the bridge. They were EMGs
which I don't like so I replaced them with Dimarzios since I had them in a
Jazz bass at one time. I like them because they are loud and fairly inexpensive. Be warned that they are not clean sounding. They have an
edgy tone that's geared towards harder sounding music. The classic series,
with the allen pole pieces have ceramic magnets which are hotter sounding
than alnico 5, which is found in Fender as well as Seymour Duncan and
Lindy Fralin pups. If you want warmth and a little lower output, go with
an Alnico pup. If you want hot and edgy sounding, than Dimarzios are a
great choice.
I found a great pup that has the best of both worlds. The Seymour
Duncan Quarter pounder. It has a pretty high output, and has Alnico magnets. I'm getting the warm midrangy tone at a higher output. They
cost 64.00 so they are pretty inexpensive. Good luck with your bass.

thanks for the input! i realy appreciate it. yeah i have the quarter pounders in my main bass right now and i think they are the best for tonal options and how hot they are. ive tried every seymour duncan and fender pup that there is and i stopped on the 1/4 lbers. thanks again.

If you have QPs than stick with em. They have better mid range than the
Dimarzios. Good mids are important with a P bass. Also. the QPs have a
bit more output than the Dps. When I switch from my MIA Fender P to my
MIM with the Qps, I have to turn down the amp because of the output
difference. The only thing Dimarzio has over the Qps is brightness and not too much. Since you're playin a P bass and not Jazz bass or Stingray than
you probably don't care about how much treble is coming out of your bass.
Keep playin, Fender forever.

I put the passive humbucking DiMarzio p-bass pups in my 1976 fretless p not too long ago and have been very happy. They still have that Fender tone, but no buzz :D .

I prefer Duncans over Dimarzio's but that's just personal preference. they do make quality pups if you dig their sound. Right now, I've got 3 P's one has a set od Duncan 1/4lbs., the other has a set of Antiquities with the raised a's.

Hey guys, it's my first post. I've been reading here for while, great forum. But anyway, I have a MIJ 51 reissue neck from 1990 on a MIM alder precision body with QP's and a Bad@ss 2 bridge and I LOVE the sound. But I also have a Mike Dirnt body with a sting neck on it but the QP's sounded kind of thin on the the ash body, I tried reversing the hot and ground and it sounded thinner. So I installed a Dimarzio P pickup that I scored on ebay. The pickup is from the mid-seventies, PAF stickers and creme covers, it even came with an old brass grounding plate. The bass sounds great, punchy and growly, with all the sound I like from the QP's.
