I just pulled the pickups from a MIM P-bass and replaced them with the Basslines Vintage P pickups. It sounds pretty sweet and fat with some flatwounds strapped to it! My question is, when I pulled the old pickups off there was a magnet attached to the bottom, what exactly is that magnet for? My general conclusion was that it was used to polarize the poles in the pickup because they were weak or something. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks
Ike

added note:
I am wondering because I wanted to rewind those babies and also wanted to get some AlNiCo II magnets for a warmer, smoother sound. I want to know if that magnet is essential to the performance of the pickup. Thanks people!

I don't think those are magnets, they are foam that replaces the springs that Gibson has to keep the pickups at height. They are just sruck on with 2 sided sticky tape. I just replace mine pups with Lace Alumti P pickups. I had to buy a set of springs to have the pickups from falling into the body. Boy do these pickups sound so sweet. They sound active but they are not and they are very very very quiet. No noise what so ever~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

no, it's a magnet for sure. and a pretty strong one too... It also has foam stuck under it for the reasons that you stated. But I had that problem with the SD pickups I put in, so I just had to improvise with what I had and it worked out pretty nice.

Does the magnet has wire wrap around it,if it does then that the pickup. It would be nice to a pic of what you were talking about.

WOW~!!!! I have no clue why that on their except maybe someone before you got the bass thought by adding more magnet that would make the output hotter~!!!???? My pups don't have that glued to the bottom of the pickups, so I would change them to a either a after market brand or replace them with a Fender brand~!!! :?

That is the way they came stock, I wonder if the posts are just metal rods and the magnet is used to give them polarity. Thanks for your help though! I think I'll just take the pickups apart and use the bobbins for winding my own pickups, give it a shot.
