There are a lot of places on the net to get a new bass. The key I think it's reputation. Sam Ash, Musicians Friend, Guitar Center, etc, are known names. Customer service might not be the best since you're not face to face w/the person. I personally would go to local mom/pop music store in my local domicile before buying an instrument online. I'd buy strings or hardware on line tho with out hesitation.

From my own personal experience I would never buy a bass without first playing it. Go to the store. You will be able to play the bass and make sure that it is what you want. Prices are negotiable and you can get a better deal.

You guys are right about checking it out first hand, but a bass bought online, has virtually never been played.

Well, if you have a store near you I'd say go and play everyone they have and pick the best one. If not, then on-line is going to be a gamble, especially with a lower end bass. You could get a dog.

You know you don't have to buy the floor model at a music store right. When I bought my Vintage Modified, I've tried one on the floor then bought the one in the box. My 1st Fender I bought off the floor, then they offered to string it - the bass was a yr old then, and adjust the neck/intonation on it. That was bought @ Sam Ash btw in Edison, NJ. I've always tried to buy the one still in the wrapper, unless they can offer new strings and adjust neck/intonation(as needed), I try not buy the floor mode.

Which is why i recommend you save your money and get an American made P as opposed to a Squier. Better workmanship, better components, and something that will retain its value over the years should you decide to keep it.

If you have to order a P off line and you have the money then an American made P bass is definitely the way to go, I would suggest an AVS if possible...they are very consistent in quality. If you can't afford an American Fender Bass, the Classic 50's P is one of the best Fender P's being made today, The HWY1 P is also a fairly safe bet. Even then Standard Series P basses are very solid in quality and playability. (usually needing only a pick up upgrade and possibly a bridge upgrade down the road. ) All the basses listed above would be preferable to a Squier in most situations, but especially when buying "blind". There's a chance you could stumble upon a really nice Squier in a shop, but it's a pretty big gamble on the net. Good Luck.

Find a dealer who has the bass you want in the store, try it out, and if you find a bass cheaper on the net and it's exactly as the one you tried out You can order it from the net.. ;)

Most of the sales people selling these basses work on commission, they will match the price on the net - most of the time, plus you're helping support your local economy when you buy local. Deal or no deal supporting local economy should be considered. Another negative buying on line, customer service. Try to get things repaired, bring it to a local store and you'll get a hard time with some items for warranty if you buy on the net and bring to a shop. It shouldn't be that way considering warranty from manufacturer should be honored, but some companies are harder to collect on warranty than others. Good luck either way.
