Hi Daniele,

The term "You get what you pay for" is a well used phrase on this forum, as I've learnt but there are many differences between on both basses to take into account like woods used & wood quality, different thickness's, hardware (anything not wood), the sound you can get from them and appearance: you'll find Fenders look better, tend to have a better sound and a better build quality. were as a Squier, with being more affordable wont have a better quality BUT I'm not saying there is any problem with them as I have a few myself and some models can be just as good as a Fender version.

Personally, I think you should try both out and see what works better with you

You definately get what you pay for.
But you can find a quality instrument in any price range, just gotta look.

I have an American Series P-bass, a Highway One P-bass, and a Squier Affinity P-bass. I wish that I had a MIM, it would be a better comparision to the Squier. I have seen that the 09 MIM's will have a maple fretboard option. About time.

The two Fenders are solid basses, I notice that as soon as I grab one of them. Heavy(meaty) and firm. Have had no problems with them, sound and play great. Love the Hwy One "greasebucket" tone pot. I go back and forth between the two as my "primary". Both are strung with flats.

The Squier is lighter(though all 3 basses are said to be alder), and the tuners ,nut, and bridge are noticably lower quality. The Squier pick ups also have a different sound to them, to my ear at least. I do like the Squier neck that I have though, not as wide as a normal P neck but not as thin as a Jazz.
These are just my opinions and observations of what I have. YMMV

nice collection Zod and glad to hear that the MIM's will have the option of maple too! *fingers crossed* :D

I guess with saying what i said and now thinking of it... the Squier vibes or vintage mods could be closer to an actual fender than to the classic affinity approach as there is a big difference between them both but even still, Fender is Fender and a Squiers a Squier at the end of the day.

thanks guys for the help. i think that i'm going to get a fender standard precision. amd slowly in the years i'll put on them a maple neck, a chrome fingerboard, seymoure duncan spb3 pickups and a badass bass II bridge. my favourite bass player is Steve Harris and i like very much his lake placid blue bass http://namm.harmony-central.com/SNAMM01 ... -large.jpg

see you soon,

Daniele

I know it's difficult to wait sometimes, but if there will be a Standard Precision available with a Maple fretboard in 2009, I would do just that. In my opinion, the Standard Series basses are some of the best bang for the buck out there. I've never owned one personally, but I worked as a Fender dealer for a few years and try to stay current on all their product lines. The Standard basses are a great bass for anyone, giving you a solid foundation on which to build your own personal "Custom" design.
