I recently bought a Mexican Deluxe PBass. I love it except for one thing--Ab on the E-string has almost no sustain. Sounds like a thud while all notes around it sound great. It's not the fret. If I tune the string a little sharp, the loss of sustain moves from the fourth to the third fret. The guys at the store where I bought it can't seem to hear what I hear. Any ideas?

Unplug the bass and put your ear on the upper horn (the one with the strap button) and pick a note; you sould hear the bass tones and the sustain without the influence of the electronics. If you hear the dead spot using this method, try changing the string.
Not knowing how old you are or how many years you have stood in front of a stack of 10 inch speakers it's also possible you can't hear it correctly.

This is a good place for an old bass player to tell the young ones to wear hearing protection. I do, and I can still hear.

That would be a very unusual location for a dead spot.

I agree, try changing the string and check it acoustically.

I have tinnitus...protect your ears.

Thanks for the advice. The note sounds dead without the amp as well. I guess I'll try new strings. Before I posted my question, I had thought the problem might be the string or the pickup. But since I hear the problem without the amp, I suppose I can rule out the pickup.

I am 55 and have had tinuitis for fifteen years--not from loud music but a reaction to an anti-inflammatory. Maybe the tinuitus is part of the problem.
