hi;;.. I ended up using a G-K for gigs and something really bothered me and... well.. first of all i realized that all fender bass have great volume difference near the full volume..(notice i said GREAT!HUGE!) I hope you guys know what i am talking about, how fender bass' volume knob is really sensitive near the full. Like i moved a tweak and the volume gets crazy louder!. I have played my american standard p bass on many amps including hartke,fender,g-k, mark, beringher ETC.. and i noticed how some amps start to scream when i put the bass volume full (which i like to do because it is the most comfortable setting..) I mean,, i am afraid i will touch it a little and blow up the whole stage.. if i set it little low than full.. which is way quieter than full.. i am too scared that i will touch it wrong and it will be all loud all of sudden.. plus i just love putting my instruments to full volume.. (of course i control the loudness on amp.. i am not a guy who play loud) ANyways, back to reall topic.. I have a gallien kewhatever bass amp.. GK backline amphead and cabinet.. I mean.. i love it i do.. however.. when i put my p bass to full, the amp screamed.. as if it is about to blow up.. I mean of course i can change the master volume.. however.. it sounds so ugly.. like.. overdriven bass.. and that is NOTHING LIKE THE SOUND I PREFER.. I love the deep bass sound, to be simple. Clean sound, but i couldnt stand hearing to the muddy sound.. After struggling, i found a little knob called -10db padded input or something like that.. I pressed it and set the EQs right.. and guess what.. I LOVED IT... The clean sound, but loss of volume. BUt i am wondering.. is the -10db knob made for situation like mine? or am i doing something really odd? I also realized that only GK amps scream so much.. I put on fender full volume and i dont recall from my memory of it screaming. Is it the GK amp thing? please help me out!(by the way i just got american standard precision so i am not familiar with it.. it is not that i am unfamiliar with amp, it is that i am unfamiliar with the BASS, not amp, but please help me on both)

:D if that pad button works the same on your gk as it dose on my bassman then that button is for passive/active basses. if you use an active bass it is sending a hotter signal to the pre amp than a passive will. this is probably the difference you hear and this is normal. if your gk has a pre amp control you can use that to control the qualitiy of your sound.

I'm using a Precision through a GK so I know what you are talking about. First, set your bass volume to 3/4, if you crank it, it gets silly, next, use the -10 db button, it will give you lots of kick, now , try your gain at 10:00, boost @ 0, master @ 12:00, I have my two mids on full and , my high and bass @ 12:00. I use a Tech 21 Bass Driver so, I compensate a bit.

This works for me, different rooms cause change, usually using the master takes care of it, good luck, it took me quite awhile to get used to my Gk, they are powerful beasts.

Another thing I'd like to add since you mentioned using the amp for gigs, is to make sure that you roll back the "Contour" dial all the way on your backline head. This is essentially a mid-range scoop that, when boosted, sounds great when playing on your own, but dramatically reduces your ability to cut through the mix when playing with other people. What sounds good on stage is different than what sounds good in your bedroom.

The P-bass in particular has strong cutting power due to it's low-mid frequency flavor. If you keep the mids strong on your amp, you're more likely to let the voice of your bass be heard better without cranking up the volume to a disagreeable level.
