Besides the price, what exactly is the difference between the Fender Precision Bass and the Squier Precision Bass?
More specifically, I'd like to compare the P Bass Specials. I'm guessing the answer is the same.

^^^what he said^^^

Top of the line Squier is still a Squier. Even as good as the VM Squiers are, they're still that "it's a Squier not a Fender" stigma on it. Buy what you can afford, or save up a little more for buying later. Or you can get after market hardware to make the Squier nicer while starting at a lower price point than a cheap Fender. I've seen Indonesian Strat guitars, the quality is junk, but I've also seen Squiers that are made in Indonesia that has top notch quality - my VM JB for instance.

the squiers are of very good quality now, and i can say the vintage modified jazz bass has superior build quality and finish than my fretless mexican fender jazz.

First off, the American made models use "pick of the litter" woods, the best hardware & American craftsmanship, which make the USA models the finest. You will pay $ for these. Next in the pecking order are the Mexican made basses. These are still very good basses. While they don't get the primo wood choices, and top notch hardware, they're still very good basses. The quailty control is generally good, although sometimes a stinker gets thru. Then there are Fenders made in Japan. Same story here. They can be very good also. The Geddy Lee model is one of the current Japanese choices. Then there is the Squier. Probably at the bottom of the food chain, these are inexpensive, starter-type models. Many are made in Indonesia, and can be anywhere from good to crappy, depending on the particular one you're trying out. One exception is the Squier Vintage Modified Series. I do not own one, but have tried them out at GC. Based on the rave reviews these have been getting (Harmony Central & Music Gear Review), I must say I'm impressed with this series. They played as good as the Mex basses and are lots less $ than one.... Hope this helps!
