Hello. i have a am. st. pre bass and i am wondering if you can change the strings without taking them off... I mean.. you can put the string from the bottom.. stick your finger in to the cover.. grab it and pull it out you know? and once it is out just put it on the bridge correctly and tune it right.. Is that possible? I am asking because i am afraid of making the hole loose by putting the cover on and off.. because i change my strings.. reallly often and i certainly dont want extra holes in my bass.. Can someone give me an answer?

Sure you can, just be careful not to touch the sides of the cover.

Well if the holes get to big he is a trick i use on my fender when the holes of the pick guard and tuners got to big. Get some bakeing soda and fill the hole about one third then a DROP of super glue . The glue will harden instently you keep repeating these steps a third at a time with every hole and it fills the holes and you can redrill them. It works pretty well and it is vary strong maybe not as stong as the orignal wood but it works.

Tooth picks work well for stripped out holes if you don't feel comfortable with filling the holes. I've used that with my squire strat pickguard when I was a kid.

I wasn't aware the American Standard P Bass had covers? If you are talking about the bridge, you definitely don't have to remove it to install the strings. Just slide them through, pull them over the saddles, and attach them to your tuners.

P. S. Some vintage and reissue Fenders P's & J's have pickup and/or bridge covers. You would have to remove the bridge cover to install the strings.
