I decided to buy a bass as a birthday present to myself for turning 27 (in 2008). What I wanted was a '62 RI P-bass with all the chrome hardware but the music store I went to didn't have one. As I walked to the bass section, I saw the 5-string AS P-bass in the center of all of the basses up on the wall. The red (candy cola lol) color caught my eye and I asked the salesman to bring it down so I could check it out. Plugged it into the tiny 15 watt amp I chose to learn with and listened intently as the guy played various metal on it (a little Metallica, Iron Maiden, also did a little slap and pop with it) and really loved the sound. The kicker was when he struck the LB string and the amplifier choked as it couldn't handle the sustain of the note. Too bad for the amp, since the paint on the walls would have surely cracked under such an assault!

I was instantly in love with the 5-string candy cola P-bass and now I can't wait to be reunited with it again as it was shipped ahead of me to my next duty station in Japan...

I want to put a thumbrest on her, and if I can find them, a pickup cover and bridge cover.

My first recolection of the mighty P bass was in 1972 when I was 12 and my music teacher at the time borrowed a vintage P from a former student of his for a school recital. I'm pretty sure, looking back now it was probably a '64. I had an hour to practice with it and had to turn it upside down (I'm a lefty). Thats how I played bass for about 6 years (just like Jimi) before I strung my pawn shop Epiphone lefty. To this day I can pick up any right-handed bass and jam the $@!& out of it. Freaks alot of people out!! It was that first experience with a borrowed P that got me hooked on the low end. Been at ever since.

I started out on a P bass copy back in 1988. I switched to a Jazz for a while and eventually gravitated back to a P bass. I like Jazz basses too but the P bass has a better rock sound and I decided not to do anymore slap bass. All my favorite players use a P bass. Roger Waters, early John
Entwhistle, Rob Wright, Geezer Butler, Steve Harris, early Billy Sheehan,
and even Geddy Lee used a P bass before obtaining the Rickenbacker.
I have a 1973 P bass, natural blonde, maple fb, black pg.
Custom built P, agaver MIM body, 70's pup, black pg,Shaller bridge and tuners, and an all maple Eden neck with tinted finish.
Custom built P with swamp ash body (tung oil finish), EMG pup, Shaller bridge, tort, shell pg, Eden all maple neck.

It was cheaper, and I like the punchy sound and wider neck. Plus most of my favorite bassists use them (Mike Dirnt, Matt Freeman, etc.)

Easy, a 1967 Telecaster Bass was the only brand new Fender bass in stock at Ralph's Radio Music in Demorest, Georgia the day I went to buy my first bass to join my first band when I was 13. I've owned 4 Jazz basses, two of them MIA and I didn't keep any of them long. I was influenced to try other basses, but I've never been 100% satisfied with anything but a Precision. I've had 3 P/J P-Bass Specials too. They come and they go. I seem most happy with a first generation style P-bass. I also own some non-Fender basses, but number 1 is a first generation style P-bass. Can't get enough of 'em.

I started on my dad's '68 Silvertone bass. I was gassin' for a Ric. I thought they looked cool.
Found a new '75 for sale in '77 and the rest is history.

'Been using an '82 Ibanez lawsuit vintage Thunderbird IV most of the time in church band (1500-seat venue) for 2 1/2 years. 'Scored an LD VB 700 cheap a couple years ago and it had the Precision sound as an option and was definitely hip to listen to. 'Been thinking on one for a long time.

'Got a coupon from GC and had a couple exra bucks in the pocket one recent day and there was a lovely Standard in natural / rosewood / tortiseshell. A gent there offered to set it up and thereafter it was love at first play.

3 Masses and services so far. The volume pot sucks big time; everything happens between "8 1/2" and "10" but otherwise it's a sweetheart.

'Prefer the T-Bird's more-mid-body bridge and therefore more "extended" neck, but the P is tight and comfy and sounds properly boomy.

You won't have a problem with the thumb rest, but the only way you'll get vintage style covers for your fiver is to have them custom made. The standard vintage ones will not even come close to fitting.

They are nice fivers, though!

I've got the chrome covers on my two reissue P-basses but wouldn't want them on my P5 because I like playing back farther on the B string for more tension. The cover would get in the way.

I just decided to get a P-bass after I saw that all my favorite players used a Precision like Matt Freeman , Randy Bradbury and even Dee Dee...
Now have 2 Precision. Right now I´m saving up for my 3rd Precision.
I dunno which one should I get sunburst ´62 or a black 70´s vintage precision
