I now play mostly Jazz basses, but when I first started, it was a P-bass all the way. As another poster mentioned, John Deacon played a P-bass.

In 1975, somebody loaned me Queen's Shear Heart Attack. John has a bass part on a song called "Flick of the Wrist" where he is playing some unique modal part on the verses. I thought " a bass can do that?" And I was hooked. I played P-basses for years and I have a '75 in near mint condition that I turn to for recording.

I was using a Hagstrom bass (borrowed from the bass player in my band) while in my college's jazz orchestra. But college wasn't working for me, so at the end of my freshman year, I was out the door. For the last concert of the year, the director informed me that my replacement for the coming fall semester would be playing some of the set.

However, he hadn't had time to master the entire list, so even though I was no longer officially a student, he got a waiver for me to sit in. Cool way to go out I thought. So the new guy showed up for the final week of rehearsals and he had a P-bass.

Even better, he let me try it out. Even better yet, he let me play it on my songs. I've been hooked ever since on the great classic sound, though I will admit that my fingers worked a bit better with the very narrow Hagstrom neck.

To be totally honest, it was being a fan of Steve Harris that got me turned on to Fender. Before, I played the same Charvel San Dimas since 1986, tried out the new American Standard at GC and was hooked for life. I have since retired my Charvel to a display case.

I play a lot of Blues and the P-bass screams vintage. Plus, my favorite bass player, Larry Taylor from Canned Heat, played a P-bass. To me no other bass even comes close to the looks, feel, and sound of the P-bass.
P-bass for life!

My third Precision, a Classic '51 P RI, just came back home after a year visiting a friend in another town. Of course, I immediately plugged her in and played a few licks...what a thump! When Leo designed the split coil pickups to get rid of the attack of the single coil, something was left behind. I love both sounds, but the '51 is well worth checking out.

My first bass was a squire Jazz. I then got a couple of Fender Jazzes of the last 10 years or so. The first time I played an American Precision was the first time I realized that the sound I always fought to get with a Jazz was the one sound that a Precision bass yields just by turning both knobs up all the way! Plus, I'm 6'2" and the Precision neck feels natural to me as well as the body style. The P bass just feels better than a Jazz to me and I find it is versatile enough for all of the styles I play.

:P

I love them!

I didn't like the look of P-basses in the beginning, and I thought so many people are using it, I wanted to be different.

My first bass was an Ibanez Sound Gear, it wasn't bad for a beginner, but then I felt like something was missing even though it had two pick ups, borth p-bass and a j-bass, an active electronic.

I really like the tone and sound of P-bass players, like Andy Rourke, Bruce Foxton, Mike Mills, John Deacon, The Sundays, Blur, and I've read that P-basses have the full, fat bottom end. So I tried it in my local guitar store, and I liked it. The look grew on me too, and now I'm a P-bass aficionado! I love it.

I bought one last summer (Squire Vintage Modified) and I'm really happy with the tone, playability, look and the feel of the insturment.

I'm looking into getting a higher end bass and I'm thinking of getting a jazz originally, since I already have a P-bass, but now I'm kinda swaying a bit to just getting another P-bass, American Standard or the New Steve Harris Signature.

What do you guys think?

I have owned four: the Classic '50s P I love, the Classic '51 I love almost as much, the Standard FSR fretless and a Squier II P I bought for practically nothing. They have all had killer sound -- the differences are in construction (in the case of the plywood Squier) or materials (two ash, one alder) or design (the single-coil '51) but they are all good.

The Squier was my way of dipping my toe into the Precision experience, and, despite its flaws (besides the plywood, some budding rocket surgeon had stripped the truss rod nut, and applied a layer of juvenile stickers on the body), it knocked me out with its sound...and it immediately led to my acquiring the two Classic Series basses.

Were I rich, I'd get the '57 Reissue in honey blonde...but I'm not complaining about my "lesser" Classic '50s. I'm even getting to like the fiesta red.

Went into a music store to try out some amps and the sales guy pulled down a P five stringer for me to test the amps with. Ended up buying a bass instead of an amp.

That was my only choice realy. All my favorite bassists play p-basses or at least Fenders except a 2. I asked for a p bass for one of my birthdays and got a p/j bass mixed copy, so a year later I went into a music shop picked up a p bass and it's been true love ever since.
