My first experience with a precision was at high school in 1984.
3 Mates and myself decided to form a band and seeing as i couldnt afford an instrument at the time i was lumbered with the singers job.
Black sabbath and sex pistols was all we ever played and smoke on the water at one gig ( naturally )
One of the lads bought an american precision (well mummy and daddy did) and i was hooked, i just loved the sound and had many an argument with the guitarist about bass v guitar, needless to say the band did'nt last 2 minutes ( 3 gigs and that was it ) rock n roll i guess.

How did the rest of you decide to learn the finest instrument on the planet.

Two of my favorite bands have bass players who played with P-basses, Floyd with Roger Waters and Sabbath with Geezer Butler. Of course, I have a black and maple just like Roger. When I first started to play though, I did not want a Fender at all, thought the were too "cliche", but I learned the error in my ways. Will always have a Fender, especially a P-bass in my arsenal.

My first proper precision was a MIM Precision, and i loved it, i sold it a couple of weeks ago and used the money to buy a CIJ Precision and i really love this one.
As good as a MIA as far far as i'm concerned.

Had been playing bass for about 3 years, then saw it in the shop and thought it looked cool,

Then played it,

Then was hooked.

P Basses are the coolest of basses because they just look like a bass a guitar. and they are simple with one volume and tone, look awesome, and SOUND awesome. Also loads of artists play them, so they can influence you choice?.....i love mine. also we had a battered one at school, so was the first bass i ever tried and i have ALWAYS liked the p bass.

My main bass isn't a Fender P-Bass, but it's got a single split coil pickup. It's an Electra Phoenix Bass that I bought brand new in 1981 for $315 OTD with a hardshell case. Cherry sunburst finished ash body with maple neck and fretboard. I've since refinished the body with a walnut stain and clearcoat finish and installed a Seymour Duncan active EQ P-Bass system and Dunlop Straploks. The beauty of the P-Bass lies in its simplicity . . . one pickup in the harmonic sweetspot with one volume and one tone control. Just set it and forget it.

I play my bass at church where I go direct box into the PA system. Yes, an EQ system would help, but it still sounds great as it is. I also have a neck-thru bass that a friend of mine and I made from scratch in his shop - a five string fretless made of purpleheart and mahogany. Sweet growls when I slide up the fingerboard.

The decision for me was simple enough. Every time I hear a recording using a P-bass I loved the tone. So the easiest way to get the tone I love..was to use a P-bass.

My first Fender was a Jazz bass. It was sweet but, at the time, my big hands and fingers couldn't get used to the slender neck, I was a beginner to the bass. I always loved Fenders, I've had a bunch.

I went back to a Strat and played lead for a long time, then got a 73 Precision, black with maple neck and a black pickguard.

When I got the one I have now, I was looking for a Precision and, when I played this one, it was over, I had to buy it.(Info below)

My favorite bass player is John Entwistle and, all the greatest songs from the sixties and seventies he used a Precision for the most part.

Just for the record, it's an awesome instrument that will always be a centerpiece for years to come.

I used to have a fender jaguar. MIJ i got it before anyone else.. I was waiting until the very day it came out.. ordered it.. and first i LOVED it. All the switches and the jazz bass pickup.. certainly it is a multitasking bass. However..3~4 years later.. nahhhh.. i just got sick of those switches and active stuff.. also.. i couldn't find enough woofness and deepness in jazz bass pickup for some reason.. (even though jazz bass, slap sounds over the perfection) After a while.. got interested in precision bass.. you know.. before you play it, you just laugh it off.. OHH its so ugly.. or.. Oh its too old looking.. Oh it only has one pick up waste of money~ blah blah blah.. ALL FALSE! I realized precision can be as verstile as jazz bass... except that it only has a volume and a tone. Tone fulled up, you can get the crazy slap sound.. tone all the way down, you can get the earth shaking sound. In between, just imagine it. Also, i realized how passive bass can sometimes make better sound than Active. It is all up to the amp and when your using active, you probably set the amp up to follow up ur active bass, but when you use precision you set the amp to make the real sound from the passive, you know? making my amps much more valuable and meaningful.. Precision.. I JUST LOVE IT!

One thing I'd like to do for the next bass I build is to take a P-bass body and route for twin split coil pickups (bridge position in reverse), stack knob for volume and substitute a passive varitone in lieu of a standard tone control. That way I can still use a standard P-bass pickguard. I'm thinking about a classic look like Mary Kay white and a tortoise pickguard. As far as the pickups, I'm seriously considering Seymour Duncan quarter pounders. Looking at a rosewood fretboard with 6230 frets for a '62 feel.

BTW . . . I'm not as big on onboard preamps as I used to simply because of the inherent problems with using batteries. Any thoughts?

The benchmark for that super round, phat tone that wraps itself around any recording or gig.

I looked at some of my favorite bassists and JPJ, Geddy Lee and Flea were all Jazz Bass players but I thought about it and for whats best for my band which is "heavy metal", I wanted that heavy Geezer Butler sound and all P-Bass users know that its the "Heavier" Fender bass and it sounds amazing. So does the Jazz Bass but I went American Deluxe P-Bass and you also get all the tonal control.
