I recently bought a CIJ 57 reissue precision which had roundwound strings on and i know that the 50s precisions were strung with flatwounds for that upright sound but i've never used flatwounds before, until now that is, i cant believe the change in sound,it sounds awesome, much much better than rounds, i have rounds on my other basses but i cant seem to put the damn thing down it sounds that good.
I cant believe i didnt try these long before now.

Very cool. I use flatwounds on my guitars, but never thought of putting them on my bass.

Fender makes a Tape Wound Nylon bass string that sounds awesome on my A/E bass. They also have an excellent stand up bass tone.

I've decided P-basses just sound best with flats. I've used both but for me "the tone" is flats.

Flats are great - I find them the best after a few years (no kidding). Another thing that is pretty vintage for bass tone is to use some foam underneath the strings to deaden the sound even more and remove most of the sustain, so the sound is almost all attack.

The wrapped strings are great - but I've found I've had severe intonation issues with them.

Good for you.
I am debating about going back to flats on my other P-bass(halfrounds on there now) cause I never want to play it. I always play the one with flats.

Deciding on strings is hard for me. I've had flats on all of my basses...Standard Jazz(MIM), Geddy Jazz, and Precision(MIA). I just put on some EB Hybrids on the Standard Jazz and love the feel and sound of them. I have a new set of flats on the p bass and now I wonder how it would sound with the Hybrids. I just keep reading on here about flats and try to convince myself to keep them on the precision. With my luck I'd want to go right back to the flats.
Right now the action is too high on the p bass. I have a question. If I have the bass set-up with flats on it(truss, bridge, etc)will I have to get another set-up if I switched to rounds? Thanks.

About 25 years ago, I bought several sets of ground round wound bass strings when a local music store discontinued the line -- they cost $10 per set! I liked the feel a lot over round wounds, and used them (yes, of course I had to buy other sets later on) until I got my first Precision about 3 years ago.

It was a '51 P RI, and for some reason I had a set of LaBella nylon tape wound flats, which I installed on it: the bass was 'butterscotch" and the strings were black, which made it look like a Black&Decker bass.

Anyhow, an experienced bass player told me that the killer tone for Ps was a split-coil with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound and Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats.

Soon enough, I had a Classic '50s P so equipped, and it was the killer. I then changed all three Ps (Classic '50s, '51, and fretless) to the TIs and that's all I play now.,

A friend played the '51 and loved the feel so much he sprung for a set of TIs (about $56 a set) for his Squier Jazz Bass.

They are pricey but they last forever and they sound livelier than most flats.
