Has anybody out there changed a scratch plate on a P.Bass? If so, how hard or easy is it, and what could go wrong?

I have been told by my local guitar shop that it is something I could do myself even though I have never done anything like this with a guitar before.

Advice appreciated

Bassbrain.

Actually it's very easy....

I've changed a few myself, and it's very simple, just take out the screws and put on the new one ;)

Don't forget you have to remove the pots. It still should only involve loosing the bolts and tightening them on the new pick-guard. Just be careful with the wires.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I tried to take off the original scratch plate last night, but there is an S1 switch inset in the volume knob, which even after taking out the retaining side screw, would only loosen enough to raise the chrome outer part a few mm, but not enough to get even a small ajustable spanner in there to undo the base nut.
I have emailed the shop I bought the bass from for advice on this but have had no reply, as usual.
My Bass is an American Series precision and only a year old from new, so I don't want to damage it by forcing something.
Anyone had a similar problem ? :?

I have never had a problem swapping a pickguard, I have an 07 P-bass with the S-1 switch too.
Once the screw on the knob is loose, the inner portion of the knob(for the S-1 crap) should come right off as well as the knob. I actually replaced the knobs on my AS bass with regular dome knobs, as I feel the S-1 switch is useless.

Thank you Zod

I am going to take my bass to the shop where I bought it and let them sort it out, even though it means paying.
I just reckon I would rather pay a guitar tech than damage my bass by using force, and then have to pay for the repair work anyway. I am going to ask the shop tech why the bloody thing won't just come off.

I agree about the S1 switch - why? I Suppose Fender thought it was a good idea at the time. :?

That sucks that you are having problems getting it on/off. Like I said before and I am sure others will agree, I have never had a problem swapping a pickguard. Just a freak thing.

Will the knobs come off or do you actually loosen the pots? I've only changed pg's on a jazz.

You loosen and remove the knobs, then loosen the top nut on the pot shaft and pop the pots out towards the bottom/into the cavity. The pot shaft is in there snug, but not overly tight.

I suppose everyone on here at some point was a bit dubious about removing the pickguard ( i know i was ) but it really is a piece of cake.
If you dont feel confident doing it then ask your mates to do it for you but watch what their doing and you'll see how easy it is.

I got the plate changed by the tech at the shop and he did a very neat job. The bass looks great, and he only charged me £15. It was worth it if it has saved me greif of a broken bass.

Oh, so you just take the knobs off, then the nut on the pots. The pots aren't actually removed from the bass. I guess the nut on the "input" needs to be removed too?

The pots are attached to wires that will have some play, but not alot. The pots are the easiest part. It's the 13 screws that I hate. Also watch out when you put the knobs back on that you leave a slight gap between the bottom of the knob and the pickguard to prevent scratching it up. The output jack has a nut too.
It is a really easy process.

I'll be ok with the screws, it's the pots I was worrying about. Thanks.
