Well I just aquired a 99 USA P-bass..3rd P-bass I have owned. Personally they were previously not my fav..but now I can't use anything else..live or recording. For the kind of music I do (loud high energy alternative rock)..well nothing gives the tone I need better. And...with only one volume and one tone..couldn't be any simpler, I am sold forever.

Now I recently passed an audition for one of the top bands in Los Angeles and they required me to use a white bass. Since the one I had is not white I stripped her down and painted it since I currently can't afford to buy another. Now to my question...

I noticed when taking the electronics out that there is a ground wire coming from the back of a pot and screwed directly into the wood with a ground terminal ring. Now I know Fender has been at this for a while so I of course reconnected it when I put it back together..but since I have a background in electrical engineering I need to ask what good it does..or if there is a purpose. Wood is not considered a conductor..as a matter of fact it takes the power from something like a lightening bolt to pass current through wood...so why is there a ground screwed into the wood from Fender???? Any one know???

NOTE: I am not referring to the bridge ground, I understand what that is for...this wire is screwed directly into the wood off a short black wire right below the volume pot area and uses a short black screw.

That is commonly known as the "short black wire screwed directly into the wood right below the volume pot area ground screw". :P

I honestly have no idea, I just wanted to be an idiot.

That's ok Zod, I feel like being an idiot all the time, so we have something in common.

Now I generally hate when someone answers a question on a forum based on pure speculation and has no idea or qualifications whatdoever to reply regarding techincal issues..but I think I may have a theory.

Now I know for a fact that grounding a guitar circuitry to a wooden body will do nothing, ziltch, nada period. So I "speculate" that perhaps the paint (at least the paint used inside the cavity) may be conductive. Now it would be nice if someone knows this for a fact to satisfy my curiosity..but regardless this bass simply kicks butt sideways from here to next week.

If you want a listen to it I put a link (hopefully it works) to one of my current bands demos. It's heavy stuff but this is one of the lighter more commercial tunes. Home recorded, P-bass direct through a sans amp. Listen how the bass cuts through all the guitar layer, drums and loud powerful vocals..impressive.

I do know that some control cavities are shielded , that'll be by foil shielding or conductive paint .

Yes jlarocho, that is what I am assuming. However I don't see any foil in the cavity and the bass is dead stock original so I am curious if Fender uses conductive paint in the cavity or is there some other strange reason they have for connecting a ground to the body.

Thanks.

I was just trying to bump it up and get someone who could maybe help you out with your problem. It's all good.

BTW I couldn't get the link for Tomorrows to work.

It's always all good with you Zod, no problem :o .

yeah I had a bad feeling about that link since I find this forum has some link issues..the hosting site has issues, I have issues with downloads in gerneral..and my PC bites (I might as well add that ebay sux too..althought unrelated to this problem or topic).

Best I could do for now..perhaps on another thread I will link to a more reliable way to check out some of our tunes.

No, there is no one I can talk to..and that is what is most frustrating..it takes every once of the fiber of my being not to kick my PC off the roof..perhaps that would not solve the "issues"..but it would sure feel good.

But other then the link issues I am somewhat mentally stable.

BTW does anyone else have problems with the links on this site? It took me so long just to link to the yngvie (sp?, ah who cares he's a dousche) malmsteen guitar givaway that by the time I finally got it to work (yesterday), the contest had expired. Hence another reason everything sux...lol

I do too, particularly lately with the site acting wonkey and all. Oh well.
