I am a big fender fan!!!! for the rest of my life i will probility not use any thing else unless its a ric of lakland. but i am 12 and do not know what to do. i can buy a used highway one p bass (hopefully an 06 or up) or a used american series precision (any year with the s-1 switch) or a used mike drint p bass (but i dont know how well the thicker neck will do with my small hands) or a duff mckagan p bass (witch i know it is a jazz bass sp) or a used 51 ressuse used (how does a single coil due with a pick and slapping). Ok thats alot but im confuzed im 12 and i've gigged at least 15 times and looking for my first pro bass. i wouldent be asking u if i have tried them out my self cause the people at the music stores dont belive i have a band or that i can play or that ive gigged. they always take the bass im tring out put it on the rack and walk over and pick up a mim or squire and say here is a bass for u little guy since ur starting off plaing bass. plz help me

ps i wanna get used because i have a low 12 year old budget

all of those basses are nice im in the market too and im looking at a jaguar which runs from 650 to 700$ and i do beleive that it has a jazz neck
for your small hands but thats all i can think of

thats sounds really wrong for the people at the music store to do that to you but if you can get at a guitar center or one that has less caring employees you can try ou there but however i wouldnt buy from guitar center

First, I wouldn't buy any of these instruments from the store/stores who will not take you seriously.

You do have to get your hands on the bass you are going to buy. All the basses you mentioned are nice. One thing is for certain, you have the Fender tone in various degrees, though it will not do you any good if the bass is unplayable.

Of the basses you mentioned the prices would also have an impact on which one is a good buy in the used market. But again, it will not matter if the bass does not function for you.

P.S. If you do have small hands, the Jazz Bass width neck will be more forgiving.

I can see where music store staff wouldn't want a young kid fiddling around with big-dollar bass guitars, but these people should have more respect for you, especially if you're actually going to buy one of the basses you're playing. Next time, when they go to 'dis you, whip out a roll of bills and slap the employee in question across the face with it. They should get the message.

Or maybe you could go in with your parents. A Jazz bass might do better with your smaller hands, but you might not like the sound of a J Bass compared to a P Bass. Which is why it's important that you try it out first. You may even find that a P Bass isn't that bad on your hands after all. And keep in mind - you still have plenty of growing to do over the next several years, and a bass guitar will last you well past puberty.

So just try to get to play some of the basses you're actually interested in, and maybe try hunting around on eBay for a used one. You'll get what you're looking for eventually.

Hmmm... well if it came down to it, there is the possibility of trying to find a P Bass with a J Bass neck. I don't know how you'd go about finding one, but they can exist.

I'd say if you like the sound of a P Bass, go that route, because you will eventually find it easier to play any bass as you grow older.

Hi Tommy,
Maybe you are trying to choose between too many different basses. Your selection is many, and your dollars are few. Truth is that any of the ones on the list will be fine. And unless you stop playing, this will probably be the first of many basses you will own. BTW. Forget about the small hands thing. Your hands will grow, and your bass won't.

My earlier post may have been a bit too harsh.
If you feel that you are being treated unfairly, bring it to the employee's attention and then to his manager/supervisor.
If that still doesn't work, then walk. There are other places that will gladly accept your money.
The weights of the P-basses should be real close to one another, being that the majority of them have alder bodies.
I did not see the fact that you have a "12 year olds budget", but with X-mas coming up, you could ask for money and that could help your situation.

Don't get all mad, that's just your "rank". The more posts that you have, the more picks you will get and your rank will change.

From the FAQ's:
How do I change my rank?
In general you cannot directly change the wording of any rank (ranks appear below your username in topics and on your profile depending on the style used). Most boards use ranks to indicate the number of posts you have made and to identify certain users. For example, moderators and administrators may have a special rank. Please do not abuse the board by posting unnecessarily just to increase your rank -- you will probably find the moderator or administrator will simply lower your post count.

As far as the 90s P-bass special, I have no knowledge on that bass. I have never played one before. Any information that I have is from reading about them on various forums. You can maybe post in those threads and gain some more info.

What bass are you currently using?

Good advice everyone. The big thing for me is playing them. Sit down and try them all and you'll find yourself going back to one after while and that'll be the one.
Sometimes when buying a bass, I'll compare to a higher-end bass (save Standard vs. American) and see if the difference is that great. I plan on purchasing a P Bass tonight as a matter of fact as soon as I get out of work.
Plus you can always modify the bass (new pick ups, bridge, etc.) once you've purchased it.
