Hi :)

Im new to the bass and trying to learn bass and hoped somebody might be able to anwser a question about an amp since there is nobody local to ask. So any way, I have a Fender 51 reissue P-bass and a fender Rumble amp. My problem is lately when I plug in the bass, the amp has sort of a hum or a buzz and I dont know how to stop it. It gets louder or quiter as I turn the volume. Any idea what it might be causing it?

It goes away or almost away when I touch any metal part like the strings or knobs or tuners, so I'm thinking maybe a grounding problem? Or maybe something different?

Yzzy

The 51 has a Single-Coil Precision Bass Pickup. The single coil pickup is more sensitive to hum (causes: fluorescent lights, ground loops, etc.) than the humbucking pickup typically found in P-basses.

Sounds like a grounding issue to me.

Have you tried taking it another part of the house? Or to someone else's house?

That was it! I have a big halogen floor lamp next to my practice area. And when I turned it off the hum went away completely.

Thanks! You guys are the best!

One of the 6 stringers in my band has an old Peavy tube amp. Every once it awhile it would buzz. I'd loan him my rubber mallet. One little whomp and it'd stop. He's gonna fix it someday. I don't recommend this though!
