I just purchased a MIJ precision bass (an hour ago) and I've got a couple of questions. 1st though is a description of the bass. It's a seafoam green/surf green precision with a white pickguard. The neck is maple instead of rosewood. the serial # is located on the back of the neck on above the neck pocket (didn't check for one on the headstock itself). According to the # it was made in Japan in either 88 or 89 (begins with an H). So heres some questions that I have. I searched on the internet for any info concerning the precision I have. Is this color rare? Is the paint nitro or poly? what body material was used? Hopefully one of the precision bass gurus will be able to answer me. When I did get some results on the search all I got back were Mark Hoppus Fenders.

Hi:

Does it say Made or Crafted in Japan. I have a 87 MIJ P-Bass Black and my serial number is on the neck plate. I have also seen some with the serial number on the headstock.

Is it a 1 piece maple neck or maple neck with an added maple fretboard?
If it has a maple board it will not have a "Skunk" stripe down the back.
I do not remember the late 80s in that color, BUT some may exist, I myself have never seen one. Most were Black, red or blue variants.

I saw basses like this that came over from Japan for a guitar center exclusive sale and those I remember looked just like what you said. Fender Japan started putting the serial numbers on the back of the neck above the body around 1993 (I could be off a year or 2)

Body is either Basswood or Alder..The finish Is thick Poly (I prefer this over the newer satin.

I have seen some fender japan models get to the USA that were only for the Japanese or European markets...Not for the USA market.

If it says crafted in Japan I would put it at 1998 not 1988. The japanese serial numbers can be confusing, I have a book on some it works about 75% of the time.
It said my MIJ Strat was an 88. I bought it in Oct 1990 and has a 1990 date in the neck pocket of 7-90

Hope this helps

I mis-spoke myself the guitar center exclusive sale was 9 years ago or so, A friend bought a bass pretty much of what you have. His says' "Crafted in Japan" on the back.

I really think you have a 90s era bass, from what you desribed, but Pictures would really help.

You have a VERY nice bass 8) 8) 8)

I sincerely hope you enjoy it for years to come

Cheers 8) 8)

Lable says made in japan. Pics will have to wait until next week. Serial # is H025695 if that helps any of the precision gurus out there.

You may have to unbolt the neck, there should be an inspection sticker in the neck pocket that "Should" have a date on it :D

Whatever, you have a good bass. I've yet to see or hear of a bad Japanese Fender, bass or guitar.
