Last night our band had a halloween gig. I play Bass 85% of the time guitar 15%. I took 3 Basses with me 87 MIJ P-Bass-96 MIM Jazz Bass Fretless-97 Squier P-Bass, and my 94 MIM Telecaster. The 97 Squier I got off a druggie 7 years ago for 25$ and it's pretty beat up, but sounds pretty decent. Mainly I played The 87 P-Bass for over half the gig and the Jazz for the rest.

There were some people there who really liked our music, after the 3rd set, one of the guys told me I was really thumping out a good beat, then asked "Why Don't you Play A 5 String?"

At Jam Sessions, I'm usually the only one there with a 4 string. Our bands name is ReTrO. I bought a really nice Jazz Bass 5 string years ago and returned it within 30 days to get a full refund. The more I played it, the less I liked it. Played OK sounded great, but I wanted to be me and NOT like everyone else. My bass buddies are always trying to get me to buy another one, but I always say, I wanna be different.

In my area about 10 years ago, 1 working musician bought a 5 string, then every bassist in the other bands her rushed out and bought a 5 string too. There are a few 4 string players, but in the club circuits with the better busier bands I'm the only 4 string guy.

I Play 3 brands of Basses

Fender (I do have 2 Squire Basses...Great basses KEEPERS)
Danelectro
Wilson Brothers (The Ventures Official Guitars and Basses)

Danelectro and Wilson Brothers do not offer a 5 string of any kind. I WONT play anything other than those 3 brands. Just my thing 8)

I'm buying a Jazzmaster on monday, but I was thinking especially after last night, buying another 5 string, I will HAVE to be a Fender, I tried several different brands when I got the first one and Fender was the best I found.
It won't be a USA Fender, because I won't get used much, I'm leaning toward a MIM or maybe a Higher End Squier.

But I may not buy one at all, and keep my "Rebel Reputation" after playing bass for 26 years I'm really comfortable on what I've been playing, epsecially on my 87 P-Bass 8) I got it 3 weeks before my 20th birthday, that bass has got me to where I am today

I'm not a fan of the 5-string as well and don't think that I ever will be, but to each their own.

Stick with the 4-banger, if that's what you prefer! As Jeff Berlin has said, 'a fiver won't make you a better player'. If you can use it and enjoy it, fine. I don't like 'em myself, although the new P5 is very nice.

For the one or two choons where I need to go below E, I use a Boss OC-3...:D

5 strings just aren't rock and roll.

Pure Muso. Leave them to these cheesy funkers!

I'm mostly a 4 guy myself -- I have 5 basses and only one is a 5. Fretless MIA p-bass, 4 string SG reissue, 4 string Ocean fretless (pretty nice for an inexpensive bass!), 4 string Breedlove aacoustic/electric and finally, the 5 string MIM J-bass.

I probably use the 5 string about 5% of the time in that there are a few tunes that seem to benefit from it. But if I had to sell off gear, the 5 string would be the first in my overall collection to go.

But I by no means felt that I "HAD" to have one and I got this one only because of the MIM price, which was reduced by it having been a floor model with a few minor dings on the body.

I had an American deluxe jazz5. I hardly ever used the b string. Most of the time, it was a roundwound thumb rest. I only play 4s now. One idea to get the low notes is to string a 4 up with heavier strings and drop it down to b or c# or whatever. But then you lose the g. Or do as Billy Sheehan does, use an octive pedal.

I "feel" like I should own a 5 string, but I'm content with my two 4 string basses. I picked one up to play last weekend and yesterday, but still ended up buying a four string.

Athough I admit that most 5 strings have a great sound...I find that anytime I see a band live and the bass player comes out with a 5 string..that I am going to hate the band...usually the case.

I too am a 4 stinger..always was, always will be. Have tried out 5 and even 6 string basses before and I find that the extra strings are in the way..have no use for them, And some of my friends that use 5 bangers don't use the extra string either..so why have the extra string?

I have no problem with bottom end and tone on my 99 USA P-bass 4 string..and my band is tuned 1/2 step down drop C#..have even tuned down to C major with no problems. Never had a reason to tune any lower..but i wouldn't be too surprised that with a fat set of strings..a little tweaking of the nut and intonation..that I could pull off b tuning (pushing it yes, but could be done)

Just my opinion..I hope I didn't peave off and 5 stingers out there...but you are a SISSY MAN...LOL jking

Oh yeah, start a war, lol. Have to agree, the five string thing is a bit odd. I played a Peavy 5 string for years and now own a Squier MB5, which is up for sale.

My main bass is a Fender Signature Roscoe Beck Jazz V bass.

I love having the high quality contra extension with the classic passive Fender tone.

In the past, it was hard to find that tonal combination. Though the new American Standards hit the nail on the head.

Regardless, if like the standard four string bass, then use what you wish.

Definatly don't want to start a war

Kidding aside, I am probably "anti-5" only because I can't find a use for the extra string. But more power to anyone who can. Actually in my band I could almost get away with only using 2 strings..I only use the D on rare occasion. Never really use the G for anything so even that is kind of in the way...lol

When the 5 - 6 strings basses came out I thought it would just pass like the 7 string guitar did, but they seem to be hanging on no matter what. Myself I rather have a good sounding 4 string bass than have a 5 string. I just can't get into the 5 string. I played one and just can't get use to them. the neck a bit wider (Musicman Stingray) and I can't get the feel for them. Stick with what you like and you be better off. You never know, the 4 string bass may come back in style and you be the top player in your town. Have Fun~!!!!!!
