I have an older American Deluxe P-bass, and after doing a few years of touring, with some not-so-smooth roads combined with extreme heat and extreme cold ( i made sure to not break it out till it was room temp) the P-style pickups are dying on me. The humbucker in the back works great still, but the P-has gotten considerably weaker and thinner than the warm round tone it used to possess. I was wondering if I had to get any special pickup to replace it with, or if I could replace it with any pickup I desired? I wasn't quite sure being that it has active electronics. Because I was looking at the sweet sweet Lindy Fralin's. Thanks for your replys!

I suspect you'll be able to drop the Fralins right in., so long as they're not overly hot compared to the standard pickup.

That is what I thought... I have yet to open up the cavity and see how things work on my active P. I've replaced pickups in a mexi P and J, I wasn't sure if the pickups on the deluxe were special.

Sorry about your pickup. Possibly the enamel on the magnet wire didn't like the temperature extremes. With your previous experience there is no reason you can't do the pickup exchange.

Custom winding has a couple of advantages. 1. Some custom winders guarantee their pickups longer than the stock warranty. (Fralin = 10 years for example.) 2. The custom winders can make it sound darker and hotter than stock by overwinding it (not recommended with active as previously mentioned), or they can underwind it to make it brighter. You can even go late 50's or 60's style. So look at it as an opportunity to take your sound to a new place if you want. Or you can stay in familiar territory if you loved the way it sounded.

Disadvantages of custom pickups are usually the price. The Fralin set is going to run significantly more than a Fender replacement. I've never used a Lawrence pickup, but they are certainly way more affordable. If Chet Feathers recommends them they are definitely a valid option you should think about. The Lawrence Precision pickup is a Wilde P46 and costs...$56. This is less than the mass produced Seymour Duncan SPB1! At this price I don't see how the Lawrence's are making much money! I wish Mr. Lawrence made pickups for the first generation P-bass because I would try one for sure!

Good Luck with your project!

Give Becky (Bill's wife) a call. They might be able to help you out.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I will check out those options for sure, I love my Am Dlx P, and hate that it isn't performing at it's peak right now.

You may want to look at Lace Alumti P pickups. I just bought a set and installed them in my p bass. Man what a bad $@! sounding bass it has become. They sound like active pickups but they are not. And noise??? What noise???? They have no noise what so ever. I bought a set off of ebay and they are the best sounding pickups I ever heard. :D
