Hello one and all once again,

I'm back here at the forum for more tips and advice. As previously stated, I'm looking at getting a Standard Precision Bass and modifying it with vintage reissue parts to make it similar in design to the American Vintage series.

I want to put on a set of vintage tuners (Fender made of course) and I see that you have to buy the turners and the bushings separately. I have no problem with this. My question is: Will the original mounting screws from the factory stock tuners work for the vintage series tuners, or are there special screws that will fit, and if so, what is the Fender part # for these? I browsed through the parts section of the site and could not come up with anything. Any and all help is much appreciated.

P.S. I know I could just buy an American Vintage P-Bass, but due to the price tag, I have found it cheaper to just mod out the Standard P-Bass. Also, the only relative difference between the two are the finish on the body and the neck. Thanks for your time.

Like this?
http://guitarpartsresource.com/bass_tunersfender.htm
TOP LEFT of that page for the reverse set. OR bottom center perhaps is the '75 set which is reversible.

Or this?

The Schaller set is about the same but costs less. These have a very good reputation.

Good luck with your project.

Dave

BrotherDave,

Thanks for the info. Quick question though. Do you know if that set in the upper left corner from the first link you provided will fit into a Standard Mexi P-Bass without any modification on the pre existing holes?

No the holes will not match up. The American Vintage Reissue set is not only larger and heavier but the screws are father apart at both the top and bottom and also farther apart from top to bottom. Keep in mind that these are the reverse tuners which were used on pre-CBS era basses. You'd have to drill new holes but the oversized assembly plate on the vintage reverse Pre-CBS tuners would cover the old holes. I discovered this by measuring the hole spacing on a 51 Reissue which uses those same reverse tuners and a 2006 Standard P-Bass.

Meanwhile the '75 Reissue tuners ($120 for 4) at the bottom middle of the page would come much closer as they are post-CBS. However I can not promise they are drop in replacements either because I don't have a 75 reissue to check for sure, so sorry. Fender has changed their tuners again on the 2008 American models.

Again, good luck with your project.

Regards,
Dave

The tuners will fit, as in they will mount properly through the holes. The baseplates are much larger, so the screwholes will be nowhere near the same. Re-use the screws you have, they're pretty close to what was used. And the old vintage reverse tuners, even those used by Fender, are not made by Fender, but by Gotoh - even the ones on the AV series. You might have a problem fitting the vintage bushes - the holes may be too big for them. Not a problem to check - just ease one out carefully with a socket wrench that fits behind it nicely, and it should come out with a push. Don't be tempted to bang it out, in case you chip the wood on the front of the headstock. The good thing about putting these or 70s-style or Schaller BMFLs (which is what the Fenderf 70s ones are anyway, after '76) is that the bigger baseplates cover the old holes, so it's an invisible mod.

I thought Beatlebum was asking if they would fit the original SCREW holes. All the pegs are about the same. Judging from measurements I made the vintage tuners will not fit the original screw holes. The peg shafts should not be an issue, but the screw holes sure are.

Also the sets usually include screws in case you are installing them on a brand new neck.

I already explained that if he wanted to use vintage tuners that he would have to drill new screw holes and that the larger vintage assembly plate would cover the old holes. Is there an echo in here? HELLOOOO...Hellooooo....hellooooo. LOL

Thank you Mastermold, that is the best possible idea. By the time a rookie could finish upgrading they would have invested more than a new one costs, yet still have an inferior instrument.

I use this analogy a lot: "If you install a $2,000 stereo in a $5,000 car, it is STILL a $5,000 car."

So Beatlebum....play the heck out of your MIM, it is a perfectly good instrument....and save toward a new MIA Vintage! A little here and a little there all adds up. Plus I think there is a chance that all American taxpayers might be getting another Economic Stimulus Check from the USA government pretty soon. Well I'm hoping so!

Regards,
Dave

I totally agree with that !

But he can also get a set of Seymour Duncan vintage pickups and that's it!That's the only thing i'd change!

That would be a good idea because it would give Beatlebum a rough idea of how a vintage bass sounds for under $70! He should save the original pickup to put it back in the MIM when he gets the real Vintage Precision and then he would then have two different sounds available! I actually LIKE the way my stock 2006 MIM pickup sounds. It does sound different than a vintage pickup. Mine is really BARKY! I like it, but not for everything.

If changing the pickup I'd also upgrade the stock .05 chicklet capacitor to an Orange Drop or a vintage type ceramic disc while in there just because I could and it would be a very convenient time to do it.

The best part of the pickup swap? The screw holes are going to match up perfectly! :D
