I use a Dano Fab overdrive, DOD 250, Dano Tuna Melt tremelo, Behringer VD400 analog delay, and Marshall Echohead Digi Delay.

None of these work too well with the bass - but it's my guitar pedal board!

I also have the Dano Fab distortion which I will say sounds fantastic with the bass - nice and raspy!

Some really tight jeans and skinny tie?

I don't know! I reckon with bass a good overdrive/distortion is all you need.

Bass is the bottom line - you need to hold strong, stand firm and keep the rythm!

If you start wobbling about with tremolos and delays, you'll just annoy your band! (guitarist can't keep in time on their own, not with all that fancy twiddlng!)

Well, I'm no bass expert - that's just my humble opinion.

If you're in a rut, perhaps pick up your guitar and strum some chords for while. You'll soon miss your bass after a few days, and playing an alternate instrument is always beneficial.

No actually not...
it's only bass I know the best.. but effects and stuff like that has never really been a very big thing.

Well , I use a Digitech BP80 for practicing at home and for recording. The effects that I use the most is the octaver at 1 octave down and at 2 octaves down. For soloing just stereo chorus ,stereo delay ,stereo phaser and stereo flanger. Not that I use them all at the same time but depends on the song and how it sounds. And of course some compression.

Now live it's different, I don't use effects at all. Just the bass and the amp.

I'm basically using effects pedals for glorified tone controls and compression.

When I switched to a lighter all solid state B2RE Ampeg head from the SVT4 about 3 years ago, I added a couple of pedals to compensate for losing the tubey thickness.

Initially I was using an Aphex Aural Bass Exciter into an Aphex Punch Factory compressor. This was a great little bass setup to get some beefy vintage tones from solid state gear cheaply. You can't go into a recording studio or big time radio station without seeing an Aural Exciter in the audio chain. There is a reason for that.

Recently I added a Behringer BDI21 between the two Aphex pedals. I must say that in spite of making some less than stellar amps, some Behringer products actually work very well. This little Behringer direct pedal is a very cool little direct box for the money. It's strong point is adding presence as it adds a nice bite in the upper mids.

A caution about the Aphex Punch Factory compressor though, it is way better for bass than guitar. It seems to accentuate any hiss or noise generated by other effects pedals and I'm convinced mine generates some hiss all on it's own when plugged into a regular guitar amp with the treble cranked up like most guitarists do. This is interesting because it was developed as a compresor for both guitar and bass. On bass it is great! None better. I even tried an EBS pedal which costs twice as much and didn't like it as much as the Aphex for the money.

My Punch Factory pedal does not hiss at all into any of my three bass amps, but into my son's Vox guitar amp with an Ibanez overdrive in front of it there is so much hiss that it is unusable. I love it on electric bass but would not recommend it for guitar. If you have any sort of noise in front of it, the Aphex Punch Factory compressor will suck up that noise and make it much louder.

Initially I got the Behinger BDI21 to use at home into a mixer for home practice so I wouldn't need an amp at home period and play along to recordings or even make recordings. It works great for that too, but due to the very positive impact it made on my pedalboard it lives there now.

When gigging I just leave the entire pedal chain on all the time. I usually only use the pedalboard at gigs since it is too much hassle to drag it to rehearsals..

I have dialed in the tone I want from the pedalboard so I don't mess with it at all. The amp is set flat with all of the amps rotary knobs at 12 O'Clock, except the graphic EQ which I cut about 1 to 2 db from 300 to 600. That makes setting up really easy. So by and large, the tone is in the pedals and not in the amp. If I have to make compensations because of some weird room acoustic issues I then will adjust the amp, usually rolling off some of the lows. So much tone is coming from the pedalboard that with the amp set completely flat and with the gain and volume also at 12 O'Clock I will occasionally see the Ampeg's clip light illuminate! That's a lot of tone.

I just use 3 Boss pedals: -

TU-2 (OK not an effect), LMB-3 and CEB-3

I use the Limiter pedal with a high ratio and quick attack just to even everything out and then the chorus just to add a bit of width. This works really well with my 78 pbass which has an SPB-3 in it. Also my Ashdown ABM Evoii loves it. :D

I did have the ME50-b before this, which was ok in the main, it actually has this awesome distortion setting (hi-band drive I think) which when used in conjunction with the octaver set to +1 octave, gives you the original signal clean, with only the octave up sound distorted, very cool!! 8)

There's loads of effects out there - my advice is to try everything you fancy and see what suits you best....

Hey All,
My board consists of a Boss TU-2 Tuner, Big Muff Distortion and Morely Volume Pedal. I use a little FMR Audio RNC Compression between the head and cabinet to keep peaks during slapping at bay. It's a good little setup and really dig stompin' the Big Muff into action for the gritty bits. Cool thread!

All the best

I use a wah-wah pedal, especially on old country stuff, if I want to mess with people, sounds really funny
