Hi Mastermold,
Here is an idea. You might try a similar post in the Custom Shop Forum, just go to Forums Home and scroll down to get to the Custom Shop Forum.

Dave

Stop it you are killing me! LOL

Seriously though, how do you like the "Chinese Custom Shop" version? (Non-comical translation, SQUIER Vintage Vibe Series.) They look good in photos for sure! But do they have the goods?

Regards,
Dave

I don't know about the Chinese Squiers, the Crafted in Indonesia is just as nice in real life as it does in the pix.

Yeah! It's surprisingly good actually!

I wish My Classic series Mexican Fender Strat and Tele were finished to the same standard!

The Frets are amazingly tidy, and the paint job is spot on. No splats, runs blobs, or anything. The factory set up was fine (I did drop the barrels in the Hi - mass style bridge, checked the intonation and all has been fine)
The maple neck is lovely to touch and look at (mine has one birdseye spot on the headstock ball)

It's light (Basswood), but sit's level on a strap with no neck dive, and feels really nice to play. I tuned it once a couple of months ago when I bought it - and it's stayed in tune ever since! (In my old band the bass player was constantly tuning his Epiphone!)

I must confess though - I'm no real bass player - I'm a guitarist, but I wanted a good bass for home recording, so soundwise, I can't really make any valid comparisons....especially since I'm plugging it into a blues junior!
I know that 51 style basses are known for sounding bright and earthy, which this certainly does - positively guitar-like on the high strings.
But when you play something like Walking On The Moon, you can tell that this bass has the correct sound!

I love rocking out to my favourite Ravonettes tracks on this thing, and it sounds just right - classic bright earthy punchy Fender tones. (Works great with distortion)

There is no more single coil hum than you would expect.

So in conclusion, I reckon it's a fantastic bass. The wood, finsh, tuners, bridge etc. are much more that satisfactory.
Obviously cost cutting must occur somewhere, and I have noticed that it has those little cheap looking small pots that you will see on most cheapie guitars - but really that's all I can come up with!

A perfect platform for pimping with new pots, caps, (and maybe a Seymour Duncan Quarter pounder? I'm not sure if it needs it though)

For the cost of a Classic Vibe Squier, it's not far off the price of a std Fender, but the CV has Mojo!

The Chinese Custom shop should pat themselves on the back! (and maybe try to be a bit nicer to animals.)

Phew.

To answer the original question, no, I don't have one, but I have played one. Compared to the Sting I had at the time, and the 51RI I have now, I have to say it was very poor...and this was a Fender demo instrument. I'd also have to say that the setup was probably needing attention. And one thing that really irritated me about these basses was that the pickup cover was placed inaccurately. No 50s P-bass ever had the cover set off from the pickguard like that. They were supposed to tuck right in tight to the 'guard. Made an expensive bass seem cheap and flawed.
IMHO, of course!
:D

There's a full page pic of the Custom Shop 54 P Bass in the '07 Frontline Catalogue.
(You may have seen it - it's propped up next to a 50's Std P bass relic around with some old bowling pins standing around)

It's 2 tone sunburst, with a white gaurd, and it's certainly beatuiful, but I'm sure it would look nicer in Lake Placid Blue, and could benefit from a Hi -Mass bridge.

Haha! I'm just being silly now! Sorry!

I've got the '51 CIJ reissue and love it, great tone and playability. The only thing I don't like is the thick polyurethane finish. The 55 CS is nitrocellulose. So I was thinking it would be like the 51, but better.
