A friend of mine recently let me borrow a 5-string Jackson. Can anyone tell me of your expriences switching from a 4 to a 5 string, like how long did it take you to feel comfortable playing it. Also, did you have any trouble switching back and forth between the 4 and 5 string. Thanks guys.

It's just like a normal bass, just one more string. It'll take you about a week to get used to it. FYI: IF YOU'RE BUYING FENDER DO NOT BY MEXICAN THE LOW B TUNERS HAVE A TENDENCY TO CRACK.

It took me about a week. I switch back and forth through out the day, it's not an issue what so ever now. String spacing is tighter, that's what you need to get used to. Not a very big deal. Have fun.

Hey Snakeye, I think if you get a five stringer you'll love it. It'll take your playing to another level. During my first gig with a 5 string I was on the wrong string somewhere in every song. The Cool thing about that was I was harmonizing with everyone! After laughing the first couple gigs off, it didn't take long to get comfortable with the neck. On a 5 string there is only 5 new notes below the 5th fret on the first string and that's cool new territory to venture into. Above the 5th fret you now have 3 octaves across the neck in a 5 fret box and that's a whole lotta funk & roll.
I have 4- 5 stings basses and love em all. Recently I strung one of them with a high C for the 5th string and added a drop D hip-shot tuner on the E-string. This configuation sounds great with J-bass pickups and it kept me from purchasing a 6 string bass.
Good luck and I hope you find the perfect 5 sting bass for youself.

Keep it Funky

Once you start playing you'll get used to it pretty quick!
After that you can switch from 4 to 5 and never have problems!

I took me a couple of weeks (around 2) but I'm going back and forth between a 5 string J-bass and a narrow neck, short scale Gibson SG and a relatively narrow fretless P-bass.

I also find (I use the 5 string the least), that I have a little finger "re-learning curve" if I haven't touched the 5 string in a few weeks. Of late, I've taken to playing a few licks on it at least once a week to avoid that issue.

You become adjusted to the extra string, you just have to become comfortable with the extra width.
