I'm a MUFF addict!!
I can't get enough muff...
It started with the big muff than the russian,
the metal muff.....
now they have an actual "bass" muff.
I think these are so cool does anyone else dig this pedal?

I'm not into pedals, but a lot of the bassist here do. I go by the old addage that effects and pedals on bass is to hide the fact the bass player is using them, unlike guitar effects/pedal to show you the guitarist is using them, the bassist uses them to enhance the sound w/o putting too much out there. Hey it's cool that you're into the Big Muff tho.

That a cool perspective. I've played guitar for 21 years and just
this year bought a highway one p-bass. I suppose my guitar-like-ways
have carried over too. I'm struggling to not use pick. I know, I know...
bassist prefer fingers but like I say I'm a bass noob and even though
its similiar you'd have to agree that it's differnent too. 'm just addicted to that fuzz......

Congrats on the P-bass! A wise choice! Post a photo in the thread for that!

Some points.
1. It is PERFECTLY OK to play with a pick. I think pick players are better off with a REALLY thick one, the thickest you can find. If you can play better with a pick, you'd be crazy to complicate things in the early stages. Some people play with a pick all the time and never with the fingers. So don't feel like you HAVE to learn to play with your fingers because you don't! I play 99.44% with fingers, but I don't have anything against pick players!
2. I 100% agree with POWERJAZZBASS about pedals. In fact I used to conceal the pedalboard behind the amp at gigs to mystify other bassists about how I got my tone. I'm currently using 3 effects pedals and none of them are distortion boxes. They are an Aphex Bass Exciter, an Aphex Punch Factory compressor and a (gulp) Behringer BDI21 direct pedal which I mainly use to punch up solos if I need extra umph. The Behringer pedal is way better than I thought it would be. When I bought it I planned to use it only for home practice direct into my desktop mixer, but it lives on the pedalboard now, so I only see it at gigs.
3. Fuzz on bass just isn't my thing either and I dial in to minimize distortion. You may need distortion depending on the style of music you are playing. It is important to have some distortion for covering some of the hard rock tones of today if you play that stuff, which I don't. I can't say I never used fuzz pedals because back when I started playing I used a Fender Fuzz/Wah and replaced it a few months later with a Fender Blender distortion pedal. There were no dedicated bass pedals back then. That was during the Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Vanilla Fudge, Cream days when I thought I needed fuzz. Then almost immediately after '72 I got away from bass effects and started looking for my personal favorite tones in my basses and rig. AND before anyone asks, no I don't have those old Fender pedals now.

I use the Aphex Bass Exciter for fatness, the reason for the compressor should be obvious. These Aphex pedals sound really good but the stomp switches have become finicky (even thought I never use these switches) and the in/out jacks scare me because they are the soldered directly to the circuit board sort. While the Aphex jacks haven't caused a problem yet I fear they will eventually. I just leave the Aphex pedals active all the time, so I may jumper them to bypass the troublesome on/off switches. The Aphex Punch Factory is a great compressor for bass. It will hiss a little if you crank up the highs on your amp though. I just crank the highs until I hear the hiss start and then back off. I wouldn't recommend the Punch Factory for guitar because of this hiss issue. Our guitarist has one and it hisses so much he doesn't use it any more.

For about 2 years Ive also been using a fourth pedal, a Whirlwind Selector, but all it does is switch between two instruments so it really isn't an effect at all. I can highly recommend the Whirlwind Selector for this application because it is not only silent during switching but is nothing short of aurally invisible. I tried other A/B switches and this is THE ONE for me. No problems with it after about 2 years of use.
