So I have just started to learn to play the bass and I absolutely love it. Someone in my company wants to buy my standard precision bass with amp. The only problems that I have with this are that I can only order online and I don't know enough about the other models. I was looking at the Highway One, the Big Block (so far my favorite), and the American Standard. Price is not so much of an issue but I welcome any and all advice between these models. I do know that I want to stay with precision though. Anyway that I go I love my new hobby and definitely appreciate all of the support from everyone out there.

Well, the fact that you've chosen the Precision Bass puts you ahead of anybody who chooses a bass that isn't a Precision Bass. Which model you'd like would mostly come down to personal preference, which you could certainly gain by actually playing each of these models.

Is there a local guitar shop that carries P-Basses that you could go to try them out at? Which one you prefer to play would answer your question about which one you want to own.

If the big block is your favorite go ahead and get it , I dont think you'll be dissapointed ! The sound wont be like the standard p bass but more like a Music Man Sting Ray bass.

The BIG BLOCK is a really neat looking bass and somewhat of a past meets future design with a 1951 control plate, early 1970's style neck block inlays with the mid 60's to mid 70's painted to match headstock. Then you come to the big hunk of a pickup that is a totally un-Fenderish looking design!

The new design active pickup looks a lot like a Musicman but Fender calls it a "Double Jazz Bass Humbucking" pickup. There is a switch so you can use the coils in the pickup in series or parallel. To echo what Jlarocho said, it has a more modern sound. It also has a VERY high output. Some say you can make it sound like a conventional P-bass and others say you can't. I tend to think you probably won't get a traditional P-Bass sound simply because the pickup is placed much closer to the bridge than on a traditional P-bass. The bridge itself looks like a Hipshot A-Series. But they call it a Fender Convertible.

Unlike some Fender basses with "Precision" in their name that really have a Jazz profile neck, the Big Block has a 1.65 nut width and a real P-Bass radius! YAY! That is a huge plus for me.

One bummer for me is that it is only available in BLACK. I'd love an Olympic White or Lake Placid Blue one.

This is a really interesting design coming from the Ensenda crew that both looks back to the birth of the Precision and might be giving us a glimpse of what is to come.

As one of the most expensive of the MIM basses it apparently is not a top seller possibly because the masses are more drawn to the Highway One and it's MIA mystique for about the same price. Stores are reluctant to stock the Big Block, at least around here, so I'd also probably have have to order it. The local Charlotte NC Guitar Center has not had one so far as I know. I've never been able to find but one there to try out. I did notice last week that while the Big Block model is listed on the Fender website as an available product the folks at Musicans Friend have it listed as a "CLEARANCE" item. So, it is probably time to get one if you want one. I've been giving it some thought for a while and I just can't seem to pull the trigger on one! I sure would like to play another one first.
