i currently own a fender precision bass, however, after much flack from my family, and others, i've concurred that i don't really know too terribly much about it. i know that i purchased it used in 1976 from a music teacher/club player (which i'm assuming that he would have played a decent bass). i would like to know as much information as can be given, due to insuring, or continuing to play on a regular basis. the only info that i have found is that i believe it to be pre '66, and probably post '57. i have a model number of 309753, and i also have what may just be a service tag that says JAZZ & PRECISION BASS 08125015. i also have the original case and key. if it matters, it's a sunburst i'm calling two color sunbust possibly with a honey colored center with red outline over a black base, with the tourtise-shell fingerboard. if this, indeed is some great instrument, and has made it this long without being trashed, then i may need consider getting one to play, and maybe keeping this one "put up" for special occasions. thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

john

i saw one like mine on ebay, and on the base of the neck (body end), it was stamped with the dates, so i just took mine apart to see, and mine is not. his was also hand written in ink on the pickups, so i checked mine, and i don't know what the numbers on mine mean. his was a 66 model as indicated. on the inside of the body where the neck mounts, quotes ....CHAMBERS... something...what does this stand for you, do you know. all i'm getting at, is if i have some hidden gem i'd like to know...or maybe i should at least get it insured just in case.

The pots match the 1971 model year. The pots were manufactured the 32nd week of 1971 which you get from this part of the pot codes, "132." This would make your bass a late 1971 model. This is confirmed by the neck made the 36th week of 1971 (your 136 stamp.)

The "Chandler" stamp is the approval stamp placed there by the person who signed off on it as ready for installation. These were actually hand signed in carpenters pencil at one time.

The value of this instrument will vary by a wide margin depending upon the all around condition and originality of the instrument, case, etc, but it is worth somewhere in the ballpark of between 3 and 9 thousand dollars.

I would not gig with it myself, but that is up to you. I wouldn't let it out of my sight for a single moment if I did take it to a gig. In fact I wouldn't take it out of the house except to record. I wouldn't let too many people know I had it. I would store it in a gun safe. I would get an insurance rider on it whether leaving it at home or taking it out. It should be insured against theft, fire and accident whether you are going to gig with it or not. A theft policy when you have it out of the house might make gigging with it costly.

The one sure way to know what it is worth is to get a certified appraisal from someone like http://www.gruhn.com/appraise.html
The catch here is that you have to pay for the appraisal, but should something happen to it you will have proof of what it is worth. Just follow the instructions there to get an appraisal. Be sure to give them all the numbers you've posted here. Close up photos of the entire instrument front and back, the original case and case contents too will help.

Whatever appraisal service you use should be one highly regarded by the insurance companies.

Your homeowner's policy will probably not pay what it is actually worth unless you have a special rider on it insuring it for the full appraised value. This will cost you extra of course. The insurance company won't let you just randomly set a value either so you will need a bona fide appraisal service to do that.

Hope that helps!
