I have a few: Slayer, Maiden, Sabbath, Madball, Agnostic Front, then some of the funkier/progressive stuff:RHCP, Genesis, Level 42, Barry White, Rush...Jazzy stuff: Stanley Clark.

Yeah, I like heavy stuff, and some funk, Jazz, and Progressive Rock.

Hard to pin down just one all time favorite band but lately I've been listening to lots of Motown, The Meters, Galactic, Ben Folds, Jon Brion and Zero 7. Great production on top of some great bass lines!

I have many favorites over the years but two that stand out from when I was getting started are The Who and the Grateful Dead. There were two examples of bass not being just a background instrument, yet done with two fairly different styles.

Much before groups like that, bass was usually just background and the only way you'd stand out was if you were also a vocalist. As a non-vocalist, I was happy when bassists began to take a more equal role in groups.

Uh...no.

Steve Harris is good, sure. Influential to lots of bass players who folowed him.

Created bass playing? Yeah - no.

My personal favorite is The Who, followed closely by Pink Floyd. Obviously one of those is more inspirational than the other as far as bass playing goes.

It's a struggle between Iron Maiden and Metallica (old more than new).

Lately, Rush is finding it's way into my cd player. The Who and John Entwistle solo albums are regulars. Old blues, Freddy King, Muddy Waters, B.B. King and others.

I would have to say: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Tool/A.P.C., The John Mayer Trio, Rush...well the list goes on I could be here all day naming bands. Last but not least, my personal projects. Oh, I can't forget Van Halen, with "David Lee Roth"!!!!!
