I just purchased a Fender p bass fretless. It looks authentic but I wanted to make sure that fender made a fretless pbass. The serial number on it says it is a 1976. Does anyone know if this is accurate or if fender made such a bass?

I have seen more fretless 70's P-Basses, so in my opinion you have a good chance that it is authentic.

I purchased mine brand new in 1975. Love it to this day. I'll never get rid of it. They were definitely an option back in those days.

Welcome and congrats on your purchase. I think in the long run you will be happy with your investment. I bought my American made '76 P-Bass fretless, rosewood neck new, at a time that I wanted to challenge myself and change my stlye of playing and performing. (I still don't sing and play fretless at the same time). I was happy with my bass for a short time. The neck warped badly on my model and I could have made a crossbow out of it. Several years later I put a '79 fretless neck on it and have used it since. I made some changes in mine a few years back, EMG pickup, Bad@$$ bridge, rear string mounting and ferules, new wiring and a cool custom turtleshell pickguard from Terapin guitars. With stainless steel flatwounds I get a huge amount of mwaah. Alot of years of Ocean Air and Island gigs took its told and I really didn't mind fixing it up a bit. It's not like I'm ever gonna sell it. I hope you enjoy your fretless as much as I have mine.

Keep it funky.

P.S. I wish I hadn't lost the chromeware for mine years ago. Keep yours safe if you have it.

Both Fender and Squier make a fretless jass bass and if ur head stock looks darker thand a new bass than it's probably a 76

That thick-skin neck finish sure darkens up, I have seem some fake ones aged and they look original, My 87 MIJ P-Bass looks that way, but it's played A LOT of smoky bars in 21 years 8) 8)
Best way I know or is remove the neck and look for a date stamp. Asthetics can be altered, check inside the bass, The pots should be around that age, but could be dated a couple years before because they were bought in bulk and used on Strats, Teles, Jazz Basses, Mustangs etc
