Hello,

It buzzes when I take my hands off the strngs or any hardware. When my hands contact hardware or strings, buzzing goes away. I have a '54 Japanese reissue, with a Lindy Fralin '51 split coil p-up (although it did it on the original pick up too). I have also had a string ground done. Any ideas???

Do you play near a computer or any other electrical device ? If its correctly grounded it could be some EMF-electromagnetic interference .

Hello,

Thanks for your help.

I play at my church. It is a large auditorium with a big stage, so I am around other musicians, and that's where it is the worst. It happens with my '62 reissue pbass too, but not as bad. I play straight into a 60 watt fender amp, no effects pedals or devices. No direct box.

At home I play through my computer mostly (via a MobilePre audio interface), and I don't get noise. However, if I play through my Boss ME-50 multi effects unit, I do.

Does swapping instrument cables make any difference?

Also if it is doing it with some devices and not doing it with other devices it could be a ground fault on the amplification device side and not really the instrument that is at fault. For example if you are plugging your amp into one AC circuit and running a direct out to a PA that is powered by another AC circuit then it can cause a problem. Since it doesn't do it with all devices I'm leaning toward a ground fault in the amplification device and not the fault of the instrument. Try powering the same device from a different AC circuit and see if that eliminates it. When I have the same problem myself, it is usually a ground problem with the AC line or the device itself.

If you've had the ground wire soldered to the bridge I doubt that is the problem. I suppose it could be a pickup problem, but if it was it would buzz all the time. So I don't think it is the instrument itself.

Swapping cables doesn't make a difference. I plug straight into an amp, which then goes straight into the mixing board - no direct box.

The amp has a ground lift switch on the back of it. When I switch it, the buzz goes away on my end, but they say they then hear it in the sound board.

I will try to find another circuit to plug the amp into and see if that helps. Thanks for the info!

Mike

Since you state the ground lift on your amp gets rid of the noise..it is probably a "noisey" electrical system where you play through the board.

If you find no simple remedy..you might want to consider a rocktron "hush" floor pedal or similar device. Our experience with the hush is that it virtually eliminated noise problems going into boards..other experiences or product effectivness may vary so research it.

Try using the same electrical circuit to power your amp that powers the board. That might help!

Don't worry single wound pickups do that

Correct...and self evident. But there are things to try as posted that may help. My single coil passive Jazz has no noise problems at all.

?? He's aware of that, hence his question to quell the buzzing he's experiencing.

Well you guys have got a good point there but my dads Fender does it and the only way we can get rid of it but still keep the Fender bright tone is by putting hummers in their and putting in S-1 switching. I don't know if S-1 switching is on the bass but if it is i would get a hummer and S-1 switching.
