Hey John11,
A bucket of KFC before you hit the stage for a few gigs will get 'em just right 8) . I know what you mean though, I'm in the same boat. Just put a new set of D'Addario .50s on my P-Bass and it sounds lovely but on another bass I have had the same set of flats for over 8 years and prefer the more "dead" sound, if you will. Take care guys!

All the best

This has been good reading 8)

I have 8 basses, roundwounds on 6 Flats on 2 (1 is a fretless) I'm looking into a set for my bass.

For the guy who stated about the roundswounds....Yes I have the same set on my 87 P-Bass...They Are GREAT :D :D :D

BUT........ My band plays a pretty wide variety of music, sometimes I NEED that old school flatwound string sound, so I switch basses.

I have played in heavy metal bands...Flat's just don't work for that for me.

You are talking to guys with different styles of music, some are hobbiest's and some are serious working musicians. I am part of the latter. Different styles and playing venues require different equipment and strings.

for 15 years I only played P-Basses They were versatile and fit many different grooves for me , but as I grew older and was making much more money, I started buying different basses for different kinds of music. I used to say "I LOVE a Fender Jazz Bass....As long as SOMEONE ELSE is playing it" But I bought a Fender Jazz fretless 4 years ago off a friend of mine, I use it quite a bit.

It's ALL About The Music 8) 8) 8)

Cheers :D

I had D'Addario Chromes on both my P-basses for a while. Switched one to Halfrounds, and put some Rotosound 77's on the other this week. I loved the Chromes but wanted to try something different. I like the Halfrounds, Roundwound-type sound without the noise. The jury is gonna be out for a while on the 77's.

TI flats seem like they're made for P-basses IMO. They have that nice fat, low-mid tone that really compliments the natural P-bass tone. If you don't mind the lighter tension (I don't) the tone you get is well worth it.

I wanna try some TI's, I'm just too lazy to order them.

What follows is a personal opinion:
I like flats on fretted basses, I do not like them on fretless basses. If you have a precision tuner you can watch how flats work to find a note but never actually find it. The human finger gets wider when you push on it, flats roll sharp and roll flat with every note. I know this is an art issue, I understand that.
I use rounds on my fretless and flats with fretted basses when I want that sound.

I think this tracks with the basic idea of the precision bass. precision because it has frets.
