I've just come into a bit of inheritance so have decided to treat myself to a new precision. I already own a MIM Precision but im now in the market for an American Precision.
I'm pretty new to bass playing ( just over a year ) so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
cheers
mick

I'd say go to Guitar Center's site.
Good online selection, you'll have a good set to pick from.

Personally, I prefer solid colors, not sunbursts. I'd also suggest a one-peice maple neck. I'm thinking of one for my P-Bass.

The best way to figure out how you like a new instrument is to play one. Find a Fender-licensed dealer somewhere nearby, drop in and play around.

And remember, even if you like a bass at a store, more likely than not you'll eventually have to make some adjustments to action/relief and all that to suit your unique playing style. I love my '08 NAMS P Bass, but after getting the neck and action setup the way I like it, playing factory-spec P Basses at Sam Ash or GC just doesn't even feel the same anymore.

Find a good looking bass, get the best quality instrument you can afford, and make it yours. People can give you all kinds of advice, but they're only speaking to their own personal preferences. I could tell you to get a black 'n' maple precision, throw on some SS Rounds, floor the action and straighten the neck, but then that would only do you any good if you play exactly like I do. Everybody is different, and like everything else in life, if you want to find out what suits you, you gotta try different things and discover for yourself what you like.

I also prefer solid colours, my MIM Precision is electron blue (beautiful colour) i've got my eye on the American standard in olympic white with brown shell pickguard and maple fretboard.

If you can go the extra $300, be sure to play an American Precision Bass Deluxe. Lots of extra tones in it. Way more versatile than the American Standard. I've got my eye on one right now at the local Fender dealer. I really don't need it but I want it. Someday I'll get one maybe, or maybe not.

If you have even more to spend there are the custom shop offerings like the Pino Pallidino model that comes in Dakota Red, which is one of my favorite Fender colors. That is a nice looker but I've never played one.

However for the same money as the Pallidino you could find a second hand 70's P-bass in great condition. A great way to get access to many vintage basses all at once in a competitive atmosphere is to go to a guitar show. There was one here in Charlotte NC this past weekend. If you don't have Gear Acquisition Syndrome a guitar show is almost sure to give you a case.

Good luck and be sure to post photos of your choice!

Hey Bigbite,
I was in exactly the same situation. I came into a small amount of inheritance and have always wanted a P-bass. I decided on the American Standard P, but then again, the folks here are exactly right, take time to pick one out that suites you. The one thing I kept in mind was I knew I wasn't ever going to get rid of this puppy so paying the higher price became beside the point. Plus, it carries sentimental value to me so that made my final decision easier. Have fun shopping around and let us know what you end up with!

I love the '62 vintage reissue pbass. The neck is very flat, and it has great tone. Comes with the pickup cover plates, too. Ask your dealer if they can get it in other colors from fender besides sunburst. You never know. I got mine in black.
