Yeah, I just hope it never comes down to that, otherwise we'll be really FUBARed at that point.

But you have to let them know, the FAIL-SAFE key won't be turned on the FAIL-SAFE box in the event of a strike. It's grim, but it's the way things are.
I saw FAIL-SAFE boxes on all of the 16 Polaris silos, on the USS Nathan Hale: SSBN623. I went on a private tour of it when the Hale was at dock at Port Everglades. I was 15 at the time. The tour was pretty as usual for what I had seen on US Navy ships I toured, until they opened the water tight hatch leading into the missile room. I went through the hatch into the missile room, and there was an eerily, almost a surreal feel to the large, long room, with its two rows of eight silos. These tubes they referred to them, were enormous in diameter. They all had an insulating foam covering the outer shell, pudgy when I pushed in on one with my finger. And on all as well, the FAIL-SAFE box.
I get for real goose bumps, and a bit light headed to this day picturing that moment in time. That was a reality awakening for me, that I hope I'll never forget.

That must have been something to see. When I was a kid, they had an open house (I guess you could call it that?) at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, and I got to sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet, probably an F-15 or F-16, I don't know. I do remember seeing all of these dials and gauges, and the joystick with the bright red buttons on it, which I'm sure were for the assorted weaponry on it. My parents had a Polaroid of me sitting in the cockpit, with a flight helmet on. I imagine after 9/11 and all of that, they'd never have an event like that again, probably. I remember the guards at the gate were still carrying S&W .38's, although I'm sure that they had M-16A1's, or the early 80's variant stashed in their guard hut, or whatever you call that thing. I don't remember anyone carrying them, at least.

I was about seven, when I lived in NJ, across the road from an Armored National Guard Armory. They had an open house like what you had at the AF Base. I was able to get into an M-60 Patton Tank. It was pretty cool, but I didn't care for the lack of space in it. At the time, the M-60 was the Billy The Badass on the block.

When I was older in FL, we lived really close to Port Everglades, and I was able to tour the Navy ships, and subs. My step father was a ship chandler, and sold a lot of provisions to the Navy. That's how I got the personal tour of the Nathan Hale, by the Chief of the Boat.

That's pretty cool about that tank. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a tank operator, if I were to join the Army. Of course, I had no clue of the reality of that, but you know how that is when you're a kid. Speaking of that, I know they had them in Vietnam, so I could imagine that must have been horrendously hot to have been inside of one in that environment, since I'm sure they didn't have any sort of air conditioning. Would you have wanted to been in one of those instead when you were over there? I suppose the one advantage was you had one hell of protection around you. I imagine they were used in limited applications though, weren't they? Did you have any interaction with them?

We had some workings with them when we were in open grounds, or around some cities, or villages. The thing i liked the most, air support. Death From Above.

Yeah, as long as they don't mistake you for the enemy.

It was pretty safe. There were several smoke flares we ALWAYS carried. US vs them. Like SPY vs SPY.

I'm sure that did happen though, from time to time. How well controlled were those napalm drops? I imagine that stuff must have been really nasty. I've seen actual war footage of it, and it looked pretty intense. I could only imagine how it must have been on the ground near it, or worse on top of you.

The damn stuff was efficient, but nasty as all get out. It stuck to things as it burned. Like a burning gel. Intense heat also. It more of an incineration, than a regular burn.

Man, I'd hate to get caught in that crap. I think they banned it's used after the war, if I'm not mistaken. Didn't they actually make the stuff on the bases? I remember reading something about that, having to stir it in 55 gallon drum barrels.

As far as I remember, it was a Dow Chemical product. Other than that, beats the hell out of me.
