Do you ever miss doing it, other than maybe the bull work involved?

At times. It was a thrill going into an empty large arena, or hall before the equipment was moved in. They was relatively no sounds. It was silent at times. It had a calming affect over me, that was so much different from when the show was at its loudest, head pounding. Try to imagine a large dome stadium as silent as church. Very peaceful.

That would be something. I've never been in one of those places when they'd be quiet like that, since I've only been in for shows, already filled with people, and usually some sort of music or other noise going on.

I'd get there early to meet the facility manager. Before that, I'd walk to the center of it, and just stand there turning around, taking in the entire place like that. Like I said, so peaceful, as in an empty cathedral. One thing I'll never forget, along with my bass sound check in MSG.

Was there any echo in the place when it's empty? That was cool that you did that at MSG. I suppose if you can't play your own show there, that's the next best thing. 8)

I couldn't imagine doing my own show in a venue that large. Yes, there was an echo in the domed stadiums, and the large halls too.
The MSG playing sound check was incredible. I get somewhat emotional thinking about it. Like I said before, it was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me. As I stood there alone on the big empty stage, in my head, I could hear the other parts to the songs I was playing too. It all fell into place. Ron was right about me having jukebox in my brain. I do have an accurate musical sound recall.

That had to have been something, like you said. I don't know, I think size is relative if you're playing, if you just think about playing the songs, and not how many people are out in the audience. At least, that's what I'd tell myself, so I wouldn't freak out, if I ever made it to play there. :P

By the way, how did you even learn how to play, did you take lessons, or were you self taught? Did you just learn how to play songs by ear and memorize them?

Before I started on bass I had some lessons while playing 6 stringers. The bass, I was self taught. I can at times listen to a song, and visualize the fretboard being played. That day at MSG, Ron payed me the finest compliment I've ever had. After I finished playing, he told me, "Damn Mr. 500, I never knew you played so well." That meant a lot coming from him. I forgot till just now, Lee Dorman said something similar to me too. Oh well. Those days are gone, over a long time ago. Oh Yeah,..........

That's pretty cool that you can do that. I suppose it certainly makes it a lot easier to remember all of this stuff. Do you usually just play along with the songs you listen to?

I play along a lot more now than ever before. Ron always told me I should have been a recording studio engineer like my father, instead of a Roadie.
Felix said I could have been a producer as well. I guess I should have listened to one or both of them. I just wrote it off as friends shooting the breeze.

I'm sure you would have been pretty good at it. You never tried to get into that at all?

I was too busy doing the other stuff, at the time. Then when I got out from that, I really stepped back from live music for a bit. It helped to clear my head.

I see what you mean. I suppose it's one of those should have, would have could have situations that you can think about down the road. What ifs, and all of that crap that weighs your brain down if you think about it too much.

I feel like I got out of it at the right time for myself. One phone call from my father could've had me into any studio, I would've liked to have sound engineered in. He did know the upper people in the trade, shall we say.
