Speaking of tanks, have you ever seen that movie "Fury" with Brad Pitt? It was about US tank crews in Nazi Germany during the final days of World War II. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fury_(2014_film) I watched it a few months back, and it was a pretty intense film.

Yes I have. I have it on DVD, and saved on our TV recorder. The depiction of the .50 Browning cartridge is not just a Hollywood stunt to be overkill in the movie. A wonderful, well produced movie. The story, cast, and everything I think are amazing.
I did some reading on the FURY tank used in the movie. A somewhat rare Sherman tank from a museum, or something like that. It was manufactured toward the end of WW ll, and there weren't many used. Still though, it was an inferior tank to the Tiger tanks, with their heavier armor plating, and 88 mm gun. The Tiger was basically a howitzer on tank treads.

Yeah, I've read and seen various documentaries about a lot of WW2 stuff, and those Tiger tanks were really nasty.

The Panzer was nothing compared to the Tiger.

I suppose the Germans were pretty efficient with their weapons designs, but they had some total megalomaniac nut job leaders in charge that didn't pan out well for them in the long run.

They didn't play well with others, that's for sure. The daylight precision bombing of the B-17 Flying Fortresses, really did quite a bit to shake everything loose. The North American P-51 Mustang was the key to the protection, and survival of the B-17's to and from their targets, later on in the war.

Yeah, we also had the advantage of industrial might, with the size of the US, and various factories and things like that concentrating on the war effort. Plus, they weren't too bright going into Russia the way they did.

Operation Barbarossa, was a total calamity for sure. It didn't do Napoleon any favors either. The Russian winter was the kicker for Germany. Just like for Napoleon. Me thinks, someone was sleeping in history class when Napoleon's invasion was studied. Image

That's what happens when you listen to astrologers, in place of Field Marshalls, and Generals. The Eastern Front was a supply logistical nightmare for Germany, as well.

Yeah, that's true. If supplies aren't coming through, you aren't going to go too far. I've watched quite a few TV shows and things about it, especially this one that came out in 1974 called "World At War." I remember history class covered some things in high school, but not really extensive like those documentaries.

You know what wasn't mentioned in school at all, except maybe a brief paragraph, was the Vietnam War. If it wasn't for you, or the few other vets I've met, I wouldn't have known much of anything about it. That, and a couple of books I've read. It's funny, that war went on from November 1st, 1955 to April 30th, 1975, according to the Wikipedia article, and it's been usually ignored, except for some of those movies or a TV show or two. There even hasn't been much in the way of documentaries, either, when you think about it. Not as extensive as other conflicts, anyway. Do you think it's because of politics that was the case? With the whole 60's thing, and the fact the way the whole thing was? It almost seems like the whole thing was some dirty little secret in some ways, even though it went on for almost 20 years, and over 58,000 people died because of it.

I used to watch World At War every week. That was narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier.

Vietnam was as you said, what I was going to say about it, almost word, for word. It was there, but keep quiet about it, and it will go away. 58,000 Plus didn't give their lives for it. The 58,000 plus had their lives TAKEN AWAY. That's the way I have always seen it anyway. For any battle, Police Action, or war. But,....... it doesn't matter much as time marches on. The dead are dead, memories get short, or clouded. And soon everyone dies of something.

I suppose the one thing about it, it is what made the 60's turn out the way it did, or maybe the 60's happened as a reaction to it. It's funny, we're still in a war in Afghanistan, and have been since 2001, and nobody really gives a crap about it, or probably even forgotten about the whole thing, unlike the 60's reaction. Ironically enough, we're more globally connected, unlike back then, when all of the information you might have had about it was from the news on TV, or whatever. That, and of course the people that were there, like yourself.

I would tag that one on the Korean War. Vietnam had somewhat the same attitudes toward it. Win, Lose, who gives a damn. (Police Action) etc. Blink, and it will go away.

Yeah, and you all got $@!& on in the process, which I always thought was screwed up. I guess there isn't much you can do about it, other than keep on keeping on.

Funny thing about Korea, is technically that war never ended, just a cease fire, and there's still crap going on over there to this day, especially with that whacko in charge. I tell you, you have to be crazy to want to visit North Korea as some tourist. One even perceived wrong move, and you're screwed. Look what happened to those people that went over there.
