I'm a guitar player but used to play bass many years ago. I would like to get back to playing the bass and the Aerodybe P-Bass caught my eye. None of the music stores near me have one I can look at and play. Are these any good? Would a MIM P-Bass be a better option? I really like the matching headstock color.

I've seen it, never played it. I've played the Aerodyne JBass, and I think it's a great bass. In general, the CIJs are beter than MIM. That's not to say that the MIM are bad in quality, just that the CIJ are usually better.

In one regard I agree. My CIJ 51 RI P-Bass NECK is excellent. The CIJ Aerodyne Jazz NECK is nice too as I played one for a while at Guitar Center. Necks are one of the most important things on a bass.

Another very important thing is the electronics. Some may disagree with this part, but in my opinion the MIM electronics are superior than the CIJ, or at least are close enough to the US original designs that you can easily upgrade them. I'm basing this opinion on my CIJ 51 RI P-Bass. On both the CIJ 51 RI and the CIJ STING bass they use mini-pots instead of standard CTS sized pots. You could rout out the control cavity on these CIJ basses to put in CTS pots but that would be messy, tricky and frankly I would not advise it. You'll have to get mini-pots if you ever need them. On my '51 Reissue I didn't like the pickup's character and replaced it with a Lindy Fralin split coil as soon as I could scrape the money together. I'm not the only one to change out pickups on the '51 RI P-Bass right away.

The CIJ hardware looks identical to the MIM and may in fact be the same hardware, but I am not sure. Both are really good.

The body woods of the CIJ instruments are very good and their fit and finish are great.

The CIJ colors and finishes are different from their MIM cousins. In some cases the CIJ finishes appear to be more labor intensive.

BUT, the one thing I do know for sure is that CIJ necks are wonderful. They aren't USA necks, but very nicely done.

The photos I've seen of the Aerodyne P-Bass show a gorgeous P-bass unlike anything else, even custom shop basses. The binding is amazing looking. It is one of a kind with lots of design refinements and it looks like it should cost more than it does.

I would like to point out one annoying thing! Fender only imports black Aerodyne Jazzes to the USA while they are selling many more colors in Japan. They also sell Candy Apple Red & Blue Aerodyne Jazzes in Japan but neither are imported to the USA. This is why I didn't buy the one I tried. I wanted another color.

I also don't get why the P-Bass version is 100 US dollars more than the Jazz when they have basically the same pickup and control configuration. Well, at least they are importing the P-Bass three finishes, Crimson Transparent, Blue Transparent and Natural so you have some choices. I'll look forward to playing one just as soon as the nearby Guitar Center has one in stock. A really nice looking bass that would look great on stage.

Yes they do that in Japan, plus the JDM model, gets a pick guard too. Not that I care on that aspect, I like my basses with out it. I think the Pbass cost is attributed to the binding finish(maybe?).

I don't think so because the Aerodyne Jazz has the same binding too.

I've also checked the neck specs on both the Aerodyne Jazz and Aerodyne Precision. Guess what I found out? The necks are 100% identical in every regard. So what you get is a Jazz neck on a highly contoured P-Bass body with a P/J Pup arrangement. The Aerodyne P-Bass is as much Jazz bass as Precision bass!

As for why the P-bass version is so much more expensive, they both have the cream binding. One thing it could be is that way better pickups and electronics are onboard the P-Bass. Won't know unless I can compare them side by side.

Honestly I would have bought the Aerodyne Jazz 2 years ago if I could have gotten ANY other color besides black.

You're right, the Aerodyne Jbass does have the cream binding, I forgot about that. Could we have bought the Aero J with different colors a couple of years back?

Different bass but same concept, the Squier VM Jazz bass is more expensive than the VM P Bass...why?

Black is he only color of Aerodyne Jazz ever officially imported to the USA for retail sale. The red and blue ones have been on sale in Japan since the model was introduced. Some people in Japan were buying the red & blue ones and then selling them via eBay for shipment to the USA and elsewhere, so a few are around. I'm delighted Fender has a wider selection of colors for the Aerodyne P-bass.

But the JDM Aerodyne has the pickguard no? I'm not big on pickguards myself tho.

You are correct. The non-export Aerodyne Jazz model for sale only in Japan did have a pickguard.

There was also a 32 inch scale model with 2 jazz pickups I think. I believe this shorter scale model has already been discontinued I think it also had a pickguard too.

:D Ihave both an aerodyne jazz and pbass. My j is the export model without a pickguard and plays as good if not better than my mia j-bass. Also the electronics are very good. This passive bass will " blow out windows." My p-bass is just as good with a graet neck and typical p-bass feel. The added bridge p/u is handy. I recomend this bass to anybody. The added cost might be from the maple top that these basses have.

I like the way it sounds, look, and play. It's a very nice bass for the money. So they come with laminated top?
