so, i was thinkin, in my opinion, dont shoot me, that if you get a bass with over 4 strings, that those extra strings are just a waste. i know people that wont play anything besides a 5+ string bass, but theres also others like me that dont like them. it just seems like no one ever uses them. pointless in my opinion.

Well, that's just it. Opinions, everyone's got 'em. I had 6 strings before, not a waste, easier to play the scales going top to bottom instead of going from head stock to the base of the neck. Nice to have not have to tune down. I do prefer 4 strings right now - tuned to D btw. I'm waiting on my 5 string to come soon. I'm very comfortable w/4 strings, I don't mind 6, and I'll be getting used to the 5 I'm sure pretty soon. My reply is not a dig towards you in any way bassflyer, just my opinion.

yea. i just wanted to see what everyone else thought. all three of my electrics are 4-strings, but then my acoustic is a 5 string. thats about the only 5 string i play. and its fretless so i rarely play it. and im not sayin theyre pontless because mine is fretless, most of the ones i play, the fifth string is to floppy for me. i guess i just like how the four strings are usually more taught and dont slap around on the fretboard.

All of my current basses are 4 strings. Actually, I would be fine with only 3 strings as I am not a fan of g-strings.(both of them  )

In the orchestra that I am playing right now , which is mostly latin music and merengue the 5 string bass gives me a super deep and tight base for people to dance to . I do have two 4 string basses and in the past I used 6 string basses .

I bought a beautiful 5 string Ibanez SRX705 in natural second hand to see if I really needed a 5. I was used to playing an SRX700 which I have had for a couple of years loaded with TI Jazz Flats so I figured I'd easily adjust to the 5th string. I didn't. After two months I couldn't get used to is because I usually use the E string as a thumbrest unless I'm playing on the E string at that moment. It is my landmark. The 5 string version was beautiful, it sounded great but it just wasn't me. Fortunately I made about $20 off the thing when I sold it on eBay. So no big loss.

Sorry, my bad, I meant to type Zod. BTW, I have the pic of the Stu Hamm in the other forum you were asking for Jlarocho. Not a good pic, but it shows he bass a little bit.

Hear it live...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL8aeeST ... re=related

I personally use the now discontinued Fender Roscoe Beck V instrument. I love the Fender Jazz Bass sound it produces in the studio and live (F. O. H. & stage) It is very balanced from the high F on the 22nd fret of the G string down to the open contra B. It has proven itself over & over again.

Image

Playing various styles of music, the Fender RB V sound gives me the tone and sub-contra range to ascend various bass lines that would normally be performed an octave up.

It took Fender to make a 5-string bass sound like a Fender. After trying the RB V twelve years ago, I have not looked back.

Also, now that Fender has an award winning passive 5-string Precision Bass, I can cover both classic Fender tones without having to pick up a 4-string.

It is just a personal preference, I prefer having access to the sub-contra range, as long as it doesn’t have a negative impact on the sound of the instrument.

No problem , but I do like the other g-string that you implied !

I saw it and that was the original color that Fender issued right? or they sold it in blue too ?

I don't know, back then I wasn't so Interweb savvy, so not sure what color they had. I went to the music store to look at a used Pbass Lyte that just came in, and my sales guy said to me, "hey, ck this Stu Hamm model out we just got." So instead of spending $500, I spent $1200. I liked it a lot, but to be honest, I didn't dig the color so much, at that time there weren't too many of them, so I bought it.

All be told, I regret selling that in '04. Other than the color, it was a great bass - 30" scale and all. :)
