I am a sponsored artist of Curt Mangan Strings so that's all I use. I generally buy medium gauge stainless steel strings. I love the way they sound and feel and they last as long as anything else that I have tried in my 30 years of playing.

Last night I changed out the strings on my 76 P-fretless. It had being wearing Fender nylon tape strings for about a year and through a '68 portaflex with EV SRO's it was warm, deep and throaty. I put some Fender stainless steel flatwounds on it and WoW it really perked up the tone, The GT-6B compression held better, more mwaah and less friction on the slides up and down the neck.

BrotherDave gave good advice on strings and Zod I used to use Halfrounds (the hexcore) back when they first came out because round wounds ate up my necks and frets!. I liked them alot, and Idon't know why I stopped buying them.

On my 5 string electrics some are strung with a high C and some have the low B, either way, I like tapercore medium lite gauage strings, Ken Smith or DK, but I have broken more Ken Smith Strings than any other kind and that's too bad because they sound great! (I'm a Neanderthal, sorry GEICO, I was first). I really like the way Elixir strings give more ring than anything I've played in 40 years. I keep at least one performance bass alive with these.

I'd like to try a set of Tomastik Infeld Acousticore on my 5 string El Capitan. Anyone else tried em?

Bottom line I know that not everyone can afford the best strings out there all the time. And when you have a room full of basses hanging on the wall it becomes an investment. There is still nothing wrong with picking up a $10.00 set of Epiphone strings from the local pawn shop or music store to get a fresh sound.

Keep it Funky

Alright folks, time for a bit of an update. My Thomastik-Infeld Power Bass strings have been on for short under two weeks now, with an average of 1.5-2 hours of play per day, sometimes more when I can actually convince my guitar-playing roommate that it's worth our time to jam some.

Anyway, these were nice strings when I had just put them on, and they're nice strings now. They still look clean as though they are fresh out of the box and I can't hear any noticable change in tone or timbre through my amp. I wipe them down with a microfibre cloth everytime I look at the bass, so...

Unfortunately, I've been missing that Rotosound...sound. The Thomastiks are a top-quality string, but I feel like I'm missing something from the sound I got out of my Rotosounds. The A, D and G strings of the Thomastik set sound good, but no matter how I hit the E string or try to tweak my EQ I just cannot get it to sound the way I want. The A, D and G sound full and rich, but the E just sounds floppy and kind of dull. Can't quite get that Rotosound treble without a pretty radical EQ setting, either. I'm getting the original bridge repaired and am going to be pulling the BadAss III off and putting the stock bridge back on, and I'm thinking I might get four or five sets of Rotosounds because I haven't heard the Swing Bass set on the original bridge before, only the BAIII.

For now, I'm going to continue with the Thomastik Power Bass set until the bridge issue is worked out, and then I'm going to move back to the Rotosounds and I think I may very well be staying there. The Thomastiks I have on now are probably going to become the celestial backup strings I'll keep with me in the event I ever need to replace a string on the fly.

Overall, the Thomastik Power Bass set was a pleasing experiment. I'm happy to have at least tried one other major (top-quality) string to compare with the Rotosounds, and they're fantastic strings, but there is something about the Rotosound steels that I want to get to know a little more intimately, especially with the HMV bridge going back on my bass.

I play straight-ahead rock, and I have recently been using a set of Ernie Ball Hybrid's on my American P; nice, glassy top end with plenty of satisfying whump on the bottom.

Rotosound Swingbass Roundwound medium gauge... very bright, very "metallic" but can be tempered easily with some tone adjustments and compression. When playing very fast runs I've found that the volume of each note is consistently the same with the Rotosounds while it seems that some other strings don't articulate each note as clearly, especially when moving around the 12th fret and the A and D strings.

My .2 worth.

I use Ernie Ball Flats...2806's usually, sometimes 2804's.
