Today's MIM basses are much better quality than 10 or 15 years ago . I certainly think that you made a good investment . I used to have a MIM jazz bass and the only thing that I replaced were the pick ups . I used EMG's . Thats a huge difference in sound .

Besides a good investment, it is a very good instrument. Isn't that what matters more?

I really like my MIM P-Bass...While some people go crazy with the upgrades. I have only changed the pickguard and Pickups, and added a cover at the bridge...It stays intonated and in tune so haven't found a reason to change the bridge or tuning keys yet... I haven't been playing it as much as my Hwy One lately. But the Mexican P-Bass is a great playing and sounding bass.

MIM Basses and Guitars are worth owning. Very playable instruments.

MIM p basses are really nice, but chek out VM squier, IMO you get more quality at a cheaper price

I know where you are coming. The reason why I asked about the investment is because I earn my living as a Photographer, visual expressions.
In College, at a Cincinnati Shop,
sold what they wanted me to have. 6 months later I purchased another Camera and between 2 cameras I had invested $2OOO.00 DOLLARS! I'm equating what I've learned using a camera v.s. what I want in a Bass.
I don't want to spend money once but I do want something I can grow to love.
My Cameras cost me @ $5000.00 I'm willing to invest @ $800.00 in my fist Bass and amp.
My next question loving Funk and Jazz is a P bass or Jazz bass?
Any suggestions?
M. Kirk

Both can do the job perfectly ! But the jazz with twin pickups can give you more sounds ! I suggest try them both !

Issue 1. Depends on your definition of investment.

Usually the word investment means you expect to make money. You probably will never make money with a MIM Fender bass you buy new and expect to sell for more than you paid. There are simply too many of them around for this to come to pass. They hold their value better than some more expensive basses from other makers. If you want to buy investments try gold or rice futures and not basses.

Issue 2. Which bass to buy. That is a 40 plus year old question. Someone suggested trying both and I second that, but would encourage you to BUY both. I never can get an accurate impression of any instrument until a full rehearsal with my amp and my bandmates to see how it sits in the mix and compares to other basses I use. This often takes several rehearsals and maybe a gig or two. Of all venues I play, a music store showroom solo session is my least favorite. So I check the frets, neck, setup, finish, electronics and intonation (with an electronic tuner) at the store while playing it just enough to get an ideal of the character. I put a strap on it too and see how it hangs on me standing up. (I bet 99% of new basses are sold to someone who has only played it sitting down with no strap and then spend years complaining about bad balance or heavy weight.) Many jazz players go with the Jazz, but others like the Precision better.

Hey, i seen the guy with the Mexican Pbass, with the cover on, did you have to drill holes into the body to get the cover on?
