so, yes, I've owned a lot of basses, tried out even more, and it's only been the last few weeks that finally I've spent some time on a '75 P bass that i picked up a few months ago.

I'll admit to being a P-Bass and further more a Fender snob in regards to NOT digging either, especially P-Basses because they are just so .... plain and boring, and yadda, yadda.

well, who's eating some humble pie now??

I can not put the thing down!!!!

My name is Peter and I'm a newly converted P Bass player.

8)

any others have similar 'conversion' stories?

Welcome to the forum !
I always been a fan of Jazz basses until one day I saw the 51pbass reissue at the store hanging from the ceiling . It had a tobacco sunburst finish with a maple neck which to me is a nice combination . So I asked to try it and couldnt resist leaving it at the store . Since then I love P basses too .

Oh how I have backslid over the years! But I find my way back to the P-bass. First bass was a new Fender 67 Telecaster Bass which really was an updated '51 Precision. That was the only Fender bass the only Fender dealer for 80 miles around had in stock. Traded it for a Jazz 3 years later at the same dealer. I regretted it the next day but thought it was just buyer's remorse. It wasn't, but by the time I realized it the Tele was gone. Back then NOBODY had more than 1 bass! Dealers TRADED. Even big star players only had ONE bass. I sold that Jazz about a year later and bought a new 72 P-bass and have not been without a P-bass since. Currently I have 3 Precisions. A 51 Reissue (modified) , a 54 (modified), and a 2006 MIM P-bass which is pretty much stock except for strings of course. I'm toying with the idea of upgrading the electronics but it really is pretty good.

Oh I've bought a few Non-Fenders too. I am really fond of a cheap bass I have that is a Chinese P-bass knock off. I play outdoor gigs with it a lot. (Anyone else hate outdoor gigs?) I've also had a couple of Ibanez basses and still have one of them. There was also the P-Bass special which really isn't a Precision since it has a Jazz neck in the mid to late 90's and a MIM Jazz before that. I had a 2005 Highway-1 Jazz and that was my last Jazz EVER. That Highway 1 Jazz cured me. No more straying to the Jazz side of the force. I'm redeemed! I've sworn off the Jazz, at least until I backslide again.

All kidding aside, there is nothing really wrong with a Jazz, I just like a Precision the best and the first generation designs (with some mods) best of all.

The pattern seems to be I bow to pressure from the other guys in the band hounding me to bring a Jazz, so I go out and get one, decide I don't like it and sell it on eBay. This has to stop.

When you look at most of my bass heroes, most of them were, or still are, playing a Precision! But none of them were playing the first generation P-basses I don't believe. Except James Jamerson whose first generation P-bass was stolen.

ya, I've had a Jazz or two over the years as well but this '75 has got me hook, line and sinker. It has a slightly narrower neck on it, not as narrow as a J but not as wide a s a regular P and it just cooks.

Might just have to get me a new 5 string P for the gigs I've got that need a 5'er.

good to be in the club finally again.

I was told once by a guy I was acquanted (sp?) with - at the time I had GSRs and other basses, that he was the same way, but he always came back to his Fenders. He left his Fender for all these other ones. I had 2 other Fenders at the time that just sat in the case while I gigged with the other basses. One night, I decided to take the Fenders out, then I realized what I've been missing and why I got the Fenders: Great playability, nice sound, great tone. Now, I don't even have anything but Fender and Squiers. :)

In the past I was a Rickenbacker bass fan until I bought one , I was dissapointed with the sound and playability . They look cool specially the jetglo but it was not what I was expecting . Somehow I always end up going back to Fender .
