Alright, I received some advice on combo amp brands. Now I'm wondering the reasons for choosing a 15" or two 10"s for a bass combo amp? They both sound good in a music store, but before buying, I'd like to get advice from people who have used these speakers in the real world (ie. gigs, etc). Thanks.

Hey Ndrifka,
It comes down to a couple things, budget, how you like the sound, wattage/ohms rating of your amp matched with the cabinet and function. From a physical stand point a 15" woofer is going to move more air due to the radius and surface area of the physical size. Typically a large speaker will reproduce lower frequencies more effectively while a smaller speaker will produce a "tighter" lower end. As far as gigs are concerned this is where physics comes into play. Since frequency is a wave measured in cycles, that translates to feet. Lower frequencies travel further before completeing a full cycle. If you are looking at playing small gigs where the bass cabinet is not being fed through a house system you may want to have buddy play through your prospevtive cabinet and walk around to see how it handles low frequencies in the store. Now since most gigs arent going to be played in the exact store you buy your gear in each room will have a HUGE impact on the overall sound, but this can help to get a good feel for how low frequencies are reproduced at the back of the room between the two cabs in a similar environment. I use an Ampeg SVT-15E cabinet, just a single 15 and couldn't be happier. Then again, that's what my ears dig. The type of music you play mixed with your technique could have a big impact on the cab you choose as well. Really look at the specs of each cabinet, what is the frequency response and what is the ohm rating/wattage. This will determine the relationship between the amp and the cab. A good rule of thumb is to keep the amp and cabinet matched within a 100 watts of eachother at the specifed ohms rating, ie if a cabinet is looking for 300 watts at 4 ohms make sure the amp has around 400 watts at 4 ohms to give. Once that is established just use your ears and best judgment on what is going to give you that "high" everytime you turn that baby on! Hope this helps, thanks!

A 2x10 configuration will sound different than a 1x15 . Personally I prefer the tight sounding 2x10 . But try them both before buying .

If you can only have 1, get the 15". It gives you a better low range sound for you bass. I don't usually disagree with Jlarocho, 2x10 are nice but if I can only have 1 or the other, the 15s for me.

Agreed, but you will not go wrong with either, or both.

I like the 1x15 because it does give you a lower, deeper sound/tone.
