Lady and Gentlemen of the forum,
Forgive me if this has already been covered, but I have a question about a P-Bass I saw yesterday in a pawn shop. Since the only Fenders you see in pawn shops nowadays are the ones made in Mexico, this one has been tugging on my pant leg all day today.
The bass does have a vintage look and feel to it. I don't know what defines the look and feel of vintage, but you know it when you see it.
I looked all over for the Made in Mexico tag and found nothing. Nothing at all. Not even anything that said made in USA. It was weird. But it still continued to shiver me timbers. And the more I looked at it, the more me timbers shivered.
I could not find a serial number either.
But I did see the writing on the headstock. Hopefully one of you Fender fellas can help determine its origin by the patent numbers, since they wont let me disassemble it without buying it first.
The headstock says Fender in black, outlined in thin gold with the following information:
Fender (R) Precision Bass
PAT 2,573,254 2,968,204 3,143,028 2,976,755
The R in parentheses represents the trademark thing.
But yeah. If you could help me out with this, I really would appreciate it.

First of all No Serial Number = No Sale. There is never a good reason to remove a serial number, and in most instances it is also illegal. I am surprised that any reputable pawn shop would take that in.

If the bass isn't stolen, it is most likely a cheap Squier that has had all identification decals removed and a new counterfeit Fender decal applied. Either way just say no and walk away.

I have to agree.

No Serial Number = No Sale. Period.

An intentionally removed serial number is something to be avoided.

But many parts guitars/basses have no serial.

Some boutique builders omit serials.

And in the '80s many Asian guitars had no serials. Or serials on paper/foil stickers where sometimes the adhesive fails and the sticker simply falls off.

The bass in the pawnshop might be a nice parts bass made from all Fender parts. Or it could be a hunk of junk made from non-Fender non-Squier cheap parts, with a fake ink jet decal. Or a boutique quality parts bass made with better than Fender parts.

Impossible to say without pics.
