I found a nice 2006 FSR Precision a couple months ago. I love the way this bass sounds unplugged, but plugged in with the EMG passive pups, not so much. I think the EMG's are not for me. I'd like to find some pups that enhance the acoustic sound of this bass.
Is there a certain P pickup that will bring out the natural sound of the bass when it's not plugged in?
I'm thinking about Fender Original, or Custom Shop vs Nordstrand, Lindy Fralin, or Seymour Duncan.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Jim

I really love the new VMOD pickups in my American Professional Precision. You could go audition one to find out if you like their tone. Otherwise Fender's 1963 Precision set is an excellent choice.

Good morning linnin, and thanks for the reply.

I played one of those Am Pro P basses early this year. IIRC they were similar to my old 63 P original pups, which is how I expect the CS pups to sound too.

Have you tried any Fralin or Nordstrand pups? Or maybe Lakland in a P bass? All of those interest me too, but not so easy to try out.
I had Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in a PJ bass that was strung with TI Jazz Flats and loved the tone, but the Jazz pup changed the tone a lot from a standard P.

I was very sorry to hear brotherdave has passed. He will be missed. I hope you were able to get hold of affprod and he is ok.

Also, I saw in your post how much you liked the Fender 9050M flats. You said that they very stiff.
Well, I'm a wuss when it comes to really stiff strings. Had a set of Fender flats with a .50 G string years ago. They didn't stay on the bass very long. At this stage in my life I'm all about what's easy, but have been thinking of getting some 9050L's. Have you tried them, and are they stiff as well? I hope they're buttery like the TI flats. I got along with them really well.

Thanks again for your response and any other experiences you may share.

Jim

OK Jim,

I my experience the CS '62s are good pickups that Fender made factory stock in 2012. That's what my jazz has (even though they aren't split Precision p'ups) and I like the tone just fine with their AlNiCo V poles.

I have a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in my '76 Precision that replaced the factory originals that died. I like them, but they are hot and do have an extended range. For most folks it's a love/hate relationship.

Nordstrands use ceramic magnets like DiMarzio and G&L. I've not heard them. Lralins are always good, but I'd just as soon have real Fenders.

affprod (Steve) did acknowledge an email, so he is alive, but I received no further information.

As far as flats go, I like Fenders and GHS Precision Flats. They both have light gauge sets that are lower in tension but not floppy like TIs. They also have a more traditional flatwound sound for Nashville/Memphis/Motown style tone. I had a set of TI jazz flats once and as they aged I began to dislike them more and more. They eventually went wonky on me and failed to intonate properly. So off they came and on went the GHS Precision flats. Five years later they are still on my '76 Precision and sounding fabulous. The Fender flats are on a custom lefty '54 styled Precision with a Seymour Duncan Single Coil Quarter Pounder that I like just as well.

Thanks for your kind remarks,
Linn

Thanks for your input linnen.

I've been leaning toward the Fender pups. I have a set of CS60's in my MIJ Jazz bass and like them really well so I'll probably go with them on the Precision too if I change the pups.
Played my first gig with the P on Saturday evening and the EMG's sounded better than I thought they would. I
didn't like them playing at home and at rehearsal, so it was a nice surprise. I'll give them a try at a few more venues and see how they do. Time will tell.

I think I'll try a set of flats on the P. I have a set of Chromes .45's that I tried on my Jazz. They didn't stay on there very long, but might sound good on the P. The Precision has Fender 7050M Nickels on it now and they're working out well.
For $20 it's worth trying out the Fender 9050L's though, so that's in the works.

I'm glad to hear affprod was located and is okay. Man, imagine having a bass collection like that. Wow!

Thanks again linnen. Hope you get to play as much as you want.

Jim

I wish there were 'like' buttons on this forum, so take this as a 'like' 63p-bass.
