Sorry if this has been covered already, but has anyone solved the problem of a rattling open A note on their Precision or Jazz? I just got a 2010 American Special Precision and when I pluck an Open A note, there is a rattle as the string vibrates. Playing a fretted A note in the E string doesn't cause a rattle. It's some kind of anomaly with the A string's nut slot or tuner or saddle or within the body. Any advice?

I've had that issue with a Peavey bass that I have, but it did it throughout the whole A string with each fret, besides being played open. I tried tweaking the truss rod and it helped somewhat, but not alleviate the issue. Then, I wound up changing the strings on it from heavy gauge flatwounds to some lighter Fender rounds that were on a Precision I had, which I replaced those strings with light gauge flats, and after that, with some minor truss rod tweaking, it stopped.

I suppose you could try adjusting the truss rod, or maybe even a different set of strings might do something, I don't know. It did help my issue, although that might not even be the same issue, since you only mentioned it just on the open string.

AKJ, I'm pretty sure you hit it: It's probably a nut slot that's too wide or cut the wrong shape. You can test whether that's the case by loosening the string, shimming the slot with a tiny piece of paper (or maybe 2 layers if the paper is thin), then re-tuning the string. If the problem goes away, it's the nut slot.

This is usually due to an insufficient break angle over the nut. It's very common on Fender basses especially on the A string. You have to have enough windings on the A tuner to push the string down as far as possible.
